Hi left my PC on while i went out, when i came back after a couple of hours turned the screen back on and the whole desktop had frozen, I tried the usual CTRL+ALT+DEL but nothing, so I hit the reset button and the computer seemed like it was booting up but I had no signal to my monitor, I have tested the monitor and cable with my laptop and its all ok. Bought a new graphics card but still the same, poss motherboard overheated guys???

It could be that, do you get any beeps from bios when it boots up? If it is your gfx card it will normaly beep as the pc wont be able to detect it. It may also be the RAM. What gfx card are you running and what is the power of your PSU?? It shouldn't over heat whilst not underload so could be theres not enough power.

Hey.

Open the side of your case and turn on the PC, does the fan on the CPU spin?

By your description is sounds like you are hearing your Hard Disk and other peripherals kicking in but the CPU is not responding which means either CPU or motherboard.

No post beeps usually mean that your CPU is pooped as to get a beep requires some sort of processing. But this depends on age of hardware and usage.

Your only other option is to pop the CPU into a friends computer and see if it boots then you know it probably gonna be your mobo or vice versa.

Shout if you need anymore help.

Ian

sorry for the hijack, but I need some puter help as well. How do I find what Mobo I have? I tried installing belarc advisor, but the damn thing just kept updating profile and never opened to give me the info, so I uninstalled it. I'd like to update my RAM and need to know what my Mobo supports. It's a gigabyte board I'm pretty sure. Thanks and sorry again for the hijack.

Hey, If you open the side of your case and have a look on the Motherboard there will be stamped GIGABYTE and then a product code GA.... or something like that. Its usually in white writing and found around about the PCI slots (the white slots approx 4" long) Look slowly and carefully you'll find it.

The GA-7N400 supports DDR400 Memory, one of the best places i would recommend is http://www.crucial.com/uk/ they do very good memory at a very good price. You can put upto a max of 3GB in that mobo but 1GB max should be spot on or 512MB depending on your budget.

512MB http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.Asp?IMODULE=CT6464X335

1GB http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.Asp?IMODULE=CT12864X335

You should note that if you have budget memory in at the moment then your new memory will only run at that max speed that your existing memory runs at.

Sometimes its worth binning your existing memory and spending a little more getting quality stable memory.

Thanks for that Boost. I found similar info. I have a single 512MB stick in right now, but unable to read what type. Can I buy any DDR400 stick and do I need to know the PC2700 whatever number? I think it says 333 on the stick that's in there. I read that the crucial stuff is really good.

PC2700 is DDR333 your motherboard can handle PC3200 which is DDR400.

You can put in DDR400 all that will happen is that the new RAM will be underclocked but will work fine, just not at its full potential.

Right i have now opended the case to plug in a new graphics card, motherboard and PSU, I have noticed that i had never plugged in the case speaker into the mother board which explains why I did not hear any beeps on boot up!! What an idiot!!

I have now plugged in the speaker and on boot up i get 4 beeps then a short pause then 4 beeps again and still noting happens on screen, any idea guys, as this does only leave RAM and Processor left to change!
