Guest Usmann A
Anybody here use this ECU from Motec? As we are seriously considering this, any views on it? I was told all Motec stuff is the danglies?? Can somebody give me the standard ECU wiring diagram, also anybody who has changed the ecu, have you lost your Aircon? Also, by having the loom spliced by Leon for the resistor pack, will this affect the installation of a new ecu? Anybody reccomend me another ECU?(apart from AEM) Sorry for all the questions, safe! Wez
Not sure if anyone has done a M800 but speak to Chris Wilson as he was looking at Motec for the Supra. Apart from that there is the Apexi Power FC which does the job fine but does not give you alot of control as the official software is not available so you can only use the Commander hand unit. There is also the AEM (i have one installed) which is a plug and play unit and fully configurable from software like the motec.
Gaz Walker
Theres a Motec on a supra in the UK, they are the daddies and come at a price. About 5 grand for the hardware, thats if your friendly with Motec. Retail is about £11/12k. Least we forgot the installation costs and mapping, as it aint exactly plug and play. But worth it compared to an AEM, maybe - maybe not. Who knows?! Gaz.
Wez
I think CW was looking at the M48 Pro which is alot cheaper than that I am sure, more like couple of grand all in or something. Send him an email to find out more.
Guest Usmann A
Hiya fellas. I got quoted £1650 for the m800 unit, then £255 for the TC.....(launch is extra)£1905+vat for the hardware. £200 to fit it, a full day, then £200 to map it, half a day on the road, then half a day on the dyno for igniton mapping. Plus We have to sort out the dyno fees on top...thats say £2300 installed and mapped...and around half a dyno day say...£250-£300 for that? In total....I reacon a budget around 3 grand....Gaz are we talking about the same Motec here??
Adam W
I thought a decent engine mapper would charge £60-80 per hour? Maybe I'm wrong . . . From what I have read on the frequent "Motec vs AEM" debates that crop up on supraforums, on the average road car you will see little or no benefit choosing a motec over an AEM, even though technically they are the better more capable unit. ie you're not going to see any significant bhp gains going with the Motec even though it will cost you a fair bit more; therefore it makes sense to spend that saved money on other things which will give you a better return. Guest Usmann A
umm..I suppose, but what I have a problem with AEM, they are in the states? And as far as I know, Paul W is the only AEM mapper for the supra, whereas they are a dozen Motec mappers in the UK. The guys I got the prciing from hasnt done a supra beofre, but I know of one in Banbury who is actually cheaper, and has done quite a few aborad, and one or two here. I am a bit stuck, on which to choose, but the fact that MOTEC are here in the UK, kinda sways me to thier side.

An AEM will take a pro 3 days, A Motec about 9/10. From my figures, that labour rate is 25 quid an hour, you know someone who can install a Motec that charges 25 an hour in london? We'd be lucky to get a back street garage to charge that in the North East! Leon is 45, and TDI is 65 (all plus vat) 50-100 an hour on the Dyno and you'd be looking a day or 2 of that... Gaz. Leon can install an AEM so can Paul W but I believe he outsources the mapping elsewhere, or did for his own car anyway (happy to be corrected on that). Motec is an Australian ECU, with UK dealers. The AEM is the cheaper option by far, but that might not be what you are looking for. Gaz

Terry, what ecu are you running? What should we budget for, a full ecu setup?
Guest Terry S
I have an Autronic SM2. If you want to go Motec I would budget 5k. The AEM will do 95% of it though, and £3k would be realistic. People will quote less, but they won't have to drive the car. Mine is so far well over £8k so count yourself lucky!

Guest Terry S
Never heard of them. DTA make their own EMS that's all. If you go the Motec route, I have a few names, but you really want a Motec trained engineer, or it could end in tears.

Guest Terry S
I don't. Save your dough and either get an AEM, or try the E-Manage that we have been discussing. At the level of mods you are at, you don't need it.

Gaz Walker
Usmann, El Tel has been there done that, doing the ECU cheap will end in tears. Go AEM if you plan to go single in the future. Motec is a bit overkill for your setup. If you want to go there anywhere I know of someone whos done a Supra and Motec setup and is South-UK based. Whoever is quoting those prices is yanking your chain though! Gaz
TLicense
I've just moved from Banbury and I know of no-one who can map the motec ecu there. Unless you're talking about pro-drive, but then they've probably got biger fish to fry and would definitely charge a little more than £25/hour!
