Rob
I've had a crazy idea aout this. Would it be possible, having dealt with the main pulley, to cut the existing cambelt in half, lengthways, and then ease the new belt on and when it's half on, cut the old one off and push the new one fully on, thus not disturbing the timing at all? or is that bollocks? Jake
Yeah it's bollocks Rob. What are you trying achieve, doing the swap without removing the crank pulley? It's not going to work mate. For a start, you can't remove the lower cam belt plastic cover without taking the crank pulley off.
Jake
Oh I see what you mean now! But there's no point in messing about like that because setting the cam/crank positions is straightforward anyway.
Rob
Just had a quote from Toyota £323, and that doesn't include replacing the crank pulley if they burn it up removing it. Tell me more about this cam/crank position business:sly:
Jake
Before taking the old belt off, you line up the marks on the cam gears with the raised marks on the backing plate (12 o'clock position). When this is done have a look at the crank pulley and notice that by aligning the cams with their marks you have also aligned the mark on the crank pulley with one of the marks on the lower cambelt cover. Just make sure all these marks are in the same place when fitting the new belt. Edit to add : I did a search for a picture but even better I found this in an old thread : http://www.mkiv.com/manual/manualtt/timing_belt_replacement/index.html
Rob
That looks dead easy, couple of hours one Saturday afternoon I reckon:D "fabricate your own tool":clown: Given the cover is plastic, why not just cut it so it can be easily removed without removing the crank pulley? Lucifer
That looks dead easy, couple of hours one Saturday afternoon I reckon:D "fabricate your own tool":clown: Given the cover is plastic, why not just cut it so it can be easily removed without removing the crank pulley? Why not just do it the normal way. We sell the crank pulley tools for £30. I sold one to a local guy last week and he said it took him 2 hrs to do the belt with that tool. Its not such the pain everyone makes out if you have the right tools. No joke, with our tool you can remove the pulley in just 5 mins... refund if it takes you longer! Rob
I didn't know that, I thought it would be a Toyota only job. Any pics, on your website? Ah, no pics, but I'm very interested. I'll let you know through your own site, once I've convinced the wife to let me do it that is, she seems convinced I'm going to bugger it up. Tch, no confidence!
