Firstly a little rant, went through the variable speed limit part of this motorway sticking to what the signs say but why do they have one set of signs saying 40 and then maybe the next 2 are 50 and then back to 40 and back to 50 etc etc, the traffic was heavy and consistent so this up and down speed limit is a right PITA. Rant over.

Question: I travel through there in the evenings most times so there are no signs which means its 70. Just wondering if anyone knows that the variable speed limit is being enforced at 70 or even if it is being enforced at all.

Cheers

I pressume that when there no red circles the speed limit is 70? A couple of times I have gone through there and at the end seen the national speed limit sign and then panicked cos I must have missed a sign or its a 50 zone.

It was fluctuating from 40 at one overhead sign then 50 back to 40 upto 50! Why dont they just leave it at one speed!! So I pressume that if there are no overhead signs with limits then its a 70? I suppose I will soon find out!! lol

It changes because it's trying to 'buffer' the traffic and allow it to keep moving along the length of the 'active traffic management' bit, rather than allow it to bunch up too much resulting in it stopping; causing tailbacks.

That's the theory anyway, I guess cos it's new it's not going to be perfect but hopefully it'll offer an improvement over the alternative. :)
