Noisey gearbox on 1996 n/a import

We’ve just changed the clutch on an Import N/A 96 5 speed due to the old one failing. When driving now the clutch feels fine. However the gearbox is making a noise when you are travelling along and remove the power. By putting just the slightest pressure back on the accelerator or by pressing the clutch the rattle stops.

All gears select fine and there is no power loss in acceleration.

The rattle is a very similar noise to that of a loose or broken exhaust heat shield. These have all been checked though.

Also when stationary the gearbox makes a whirring noise which stops when the clutch is pressed.

During the removal of the gearbox we lost about a litre of fluid. The stuff that came out was as thick as treacle. We replaced it with much thinner 75/90 as recommend by the motor factors who also phoned Toyota to check as it wasn’t listed in their book.

Could the thinner 75/90 be the cause of the noise? Do we need a much thicker oil to put in to stop the rattle which could be due to the thin stuff?

Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Richard
