Cheers Gav.

Quick thicky lesson please :looney:

I assumed a hub allows information to pass to all routes at the same time?

Where as a Switch directs information to certain locations?

I assume therefore that by using a switcher it will direct the relevant information to the desired locations????

Many thanks again.

A hub ind a switch basically do the same thing, however a switch does it more efficiently (easiest way to explain it without getting over technical).

Best thing to do is buy a switch, they used to be a fortune compared to hubs, now there so cheap it kinda makes hubs redundant :)

Yup, you are correct...

A hub simply relays information it gets on one port to all the other ports...

A switch looks at the traffic and works out which ports it needs to go to... this means in theory that you don't send traffic to ports which don't need it... also switches are better at handling 10 and 100mbit traffic than multi-speed hubs (which actually have tiny 2 port switches inside anyway)

In a very simply nutshell...

FYI I just bought switch unit and more cables (straight ones).

The switch can handle crossover cables, so would my other cables work?

For the price of the cables i bought them just in case anyway.

Details below for those that also might want to do this:-
