HERONS ! Im losing quite a few fish to a heron, fish Ive had for years. Vinnie (so called cos he headed an apple that fell on him but survived) fell foul to the bastard last week. I need an Anti Heron Device that really works...I put a fake plastic heron up last year, no good - I put a wire round the edge on little stakes, no good - Ive tried a net over the pond, which works but all the plants / rushes / irises grow through it and its a pain to clean the filter....any ideas (bright or insane) will be most welcome

Back in the day worked on fish farms and the herons were the one predator that I really admired.

We used nets across the cages (30mtrs across) and that foxed them but then you see them ganging up and they learned that if they all sat in the middle off the net it would lower down and let them reach the slamon! :respekt:

So other than the net, pass, just hope they don't learn to sit in the middle in packs :sly:

Herons are beautiful birds, and violence isnt an option...besides, they either come in under the radar at dawn or wait for me to go to work...so a net is at present the only option - someone else has suggested a siluette of a cat or some kiddies windmill thingies planted round the pond...Jane rang me at work the other day to tell me we had a stork in the garden, but Im only asking about herons here, not senile dementia

Walk-in cage, like a big bird cage...only to keep birds out. Or a big flat mesh of chicken wire. Depending on the depth between water level and the top of the pond, that might work. Something strong enough not to bend under the weight of a bird anyway.

I assume you have tried the fake Heron at the side of the Pond?

weld Mesh the pond over. BTW do you have the problem all year or just when it starts to get colder
