Clutch seems scratchy!

OK it started off doing this about once every 100 clutch depressions or so, and a few pumps sorted it, I thought maybe an air pocket or something, but now it does it most of the time and it's really annoying.

It just feels gritty when you push the clutch in or out, like a ratchet kind of feeling, can't hear it just feel it on the pedal, like it clicks several times as it goes down or up. Haven't tried with the engine off but it does it in gear or not.

I've got the old noise that goes when you push the clutch down, which also seems to be getting worse - I believe this is the release bearing??

I'll be looking at an RPS sport with street disc at some point in the near future anyway.

Just wondered if my problem is known and/or obvious?

the noise is either a finished dual mass flywheel or the bearing..

If you after a full set of rings and bearings I have some that were used for 200 miles and then switched out for a bigger unit. They are perfect and yours for £30..

I would have the whole lot changed as it SOUNDS like most of it is passed its expiry date... New flywheel, bearings pressure plate and clutch plate...

If its starting to feel rough its more than likely on the way out anyway. :thanks:

It is clicky rather than rough, odd sensation.

The clutch doesn't slip AT ALL on the motorway, still works as normal.

It IS still clicky when the engine is off as well (although still hot).

I really didn't want to have to do the flywheel, but was going to get the RPS sport clutch (solid hub).

I need someone to drive it who knows what's what and suggest something really. Preferably not someone who's going to try and sell me parts!!

I can't afford to buy anything at the moment so I'm reduced to necessary parts only.

Well the cost of replacing anything in the gearbox is going to be dear as it will need to be dropped and re installed..

Thats why I suggested the whole lot. Its VERY difficult to almost imposible to determine whats wrong with the clutch by driving it unless of course its slipping.

Get the inspection shields off and have a look for anything that might be wrong.. If you cant see anything Im afraid is got to be dropped.

Yeah it's a nice idea but I don't have the money to change things 'just in case' they're broken, I need to make sure they're going to fail first really!

Maybe I'll change the clutch and hope for the best, get the fly skimmed if it looks like it needs it.

You were talking about the release bearing weren't you? Cos it's definitely that going. Could it be the race breaking up and causing occasional grittyness?

Please stop mentioning changing flywheels!! :(

If the whole lot chatters and it goes when the pedal is depressed the dual mass section of your flywheel is not very dual mass any more and probably has to much play..

If you are considering skiming the flywheel it needs to be (DRY TURNED) Also make sure you tape up the groove btween the flywheel plates to stop swarf and other crap getting in..

Dry Turning flywheels is not good at all and many people try it and fail and just have to buy a new or second hand one with low miles..

If your going to try and turb the flywheel I would suggest the following..

Remove box..

Get flwheel removed and turned, Replace bearings and clutch plate.. Pressure plate is probably fine :innocent:

If the sound and clicking feeling is coming from the clutch pedal area even when engine is off it is likely to be due to friction where the clutch actuator rod (rod attached to clutch pedal going through the fire wall) engages the master cylinder. For some reason debris (metal or other) builds up behind the rod so that it make a raspy and clicking sound when the clutch is depressed. Either you have to pull the master cylinder to clean and lubricate or poke a hole in the boot around the actuator rod and spray some WD-40 (need spray extension pipe) in there to flush away the crap. Helps to disconnect the rod from the clutch pedal and work around. Mine had the same problem which was driving me nuts. I did the WD_40 thing after pulling out the whole clutch pedal assembly.

derek

hmmm....... may try squirting some wd40 all around in my footwell then see if that helps (not all around my footwell obviously!! You know what I mean.). Would air pockets in the fluid be possible and cause this? Or is it a closed system?

Why would it only do it when hot?

I just went for a drive and it was fine, I went up a step from my recent pulling away mode, to just above 'pansy', and after a bit on the motorway it started feeling really gritty again!
