terribleturner
Changed my plugs yesterday. A little P O'd coz the recipt from the last bloke who owned the car said it had IK27's in, but when i got them out they were 24's. Do you think the state of them would be the cause of my hesitation and revs bouncing at 90/100 in Top gear?? because i've put 27's in instead of 24's it's not gonna be a straight swop where i can compare results. Guest Terry S
I would personally go to a warmer plug than a 27 for your application James. The 24's would be fine, but depends how long they have been in there.
terribleturner
Cheers Terry, they've been in there a while. I'll see how the 27's behave and order some 24's so i can change incase i get problems.
Guest Terry S
The only reason I said use a colder grade is in my experience the 27's foul up much quicker.
Guest chiefvinso
Excuse me for jumping into a conversation, but which plug is the colder? 27 right? When you say foul up, does that mean burn out or coke up or whatever. Cheers
Matt T
Foul up = get lots of crap on them basically, like they have by the looks of it. Have you checked if the plug seals in the rocker cover have corroded away? The plugs look a little oily
Guest Terry S
sorry my bad should have written warmer.
Guest chiefvinso
I thought a colder plug would be good for higher boost or probably does it have relation to air intake temp which plug you should use?
Guest Terry S
you are correct. For the really big power cars , but my poor car is running just fine on NGKBCPR7ES' which are the grade equivalent of an IK22
Matt T
I thought a colder plug would be good for higher boost or probably does it have relation to air intake temp which plug you should use? Colder plug = wont pre-detonate/ignite due to the heat in the cylinders, therefore less chance of det. More boost = more heat in cylinders. Hence the more boost and power your running, the cooler the plug you should use. But go too cool and you will have spark problems
Guest chiefvinso
Hmmmm, interesting - when I get my car it will be serviced and pressumably the plugs will be manufacturers recommendations. Will these be ok for the time being or should I get some iridium plugs to be safe? The car is almost standard, it has an HKS drager zorst and some hks air intakes but the rest is standard - except for boost gauge. Cheers
Matt T
Your probably running close to standard boost, so standard plugs will be fine. Nothing wrong with going a grade cooler though if you plan to uprate anything else at some point. I *think* iridium plugs offer no performance upgrade other than lasting longer
Guest Terry S
get some NGK BCPR7ES from Halfrauds or Partco
Guest chiefvinso
And leave the leads standard? One of the first mods recommended to me by a jap car tuning business for my mr2 turbo was some iridium plugs and magnecor leads just to start me off. Guest Terry S
I assume its an NA then...
terribleturner
Terry roughly what sort of price are they?? Gonna get some 24's from the US for about £40/45.
Matt T
IMO performance leads offer NO performance upgrade over a new set of standard leads. Maybe if you have uprated ignition and major power already, but not on a mildly modded car.
Guest chiefvinso
But do they add piece of mind as they are less likely to break down?
Guest chiefvinso
Terry its a TT, should have said that in the beginning. Taking over terribleturner's thread - sorry!
Alex
TT's don't have leads!!!!!!!!!
Guest Terry S
Like Alex said you'll struggle to find leads unless its a VVTi
Guest chiefvinso
So what do they have?
Guest Terry S
Terry roughly what sort of price are they?? Gonna get some 24's from the US for about £40/45. What the NGK's, about £1.50 a plug
Steve
So what do they have? Coil Packs
Alex
Coil Packs mounted directly on the plugs....3x2 coils packs to be precise. The NA has a dizzy with leads. Proper engines use coil packs. /runs for cover...
