Bit of brown crap under rad cap

Had a look under the rad cap today and noticed a tiny bit of light brown crap in the rim of the hole which you screw the cap into. No other signs of mayonaisse type stuff. I've attached some blurry pics, but you should be able to make out what I've found. No gunk under oil cap, no loss of coolant, so i presume this is nothing to worry about?

Does the 'forlife' change colour if there are exh gases present? meant to inform you of impeding headgasket galore, I guess.

If that is not the colour the coolant is meant to be, I'd flush it and investigate what the feck is going on. Is it rust? If so what has suddenly deteriorated?

I'm about to flush my own cooling system later today by the way.

I've got lots of litres of deionised water ready to gargle

I'd say you still had crap in it from before your last flush and so you didn't do a good enough job ;) :p

I'd put some radiator flush in, run it through the cycle suggested on the packet and then flush the system with a hose via the pipes at the back of the engine....and by unhooking the lower rad pipe from the radiator.

I agree with Alex, whoever 'flushed' the system last time didn't do it properly :)

I had a similar problem when Toyota serviced my car, I asked for a full flush but within months it was like yours again. I solved it with a new radiator but some people might consider that overkill :)

One problem with coolant flushing agents is that you have to keep the engine running for a while, so that they circulate and heat up.

In the meantime the water pump is in contact with them, which is not ideal.

I'll be running mine with mostly distilled water (plus what's left of the old coolant, some lubricating agents are welcome anyway) for a few miles.

Then empty the rad again (whatever comes out, 4-5 litres) and refill again with distilled water for another short drive.

Then I'll assume that the whole system is practically all water, so fill with 3 litres of pure coolant, rest water (de-ionised, ALWAYS)

(9.4 litres is the capacity for the Auto so that will result to approx 30% strength, more than enough. )
