Soop Dogg
Any ideas what I've done? None of the animated avatars or smilies are doing anything any more on my PC.
RedM
Do you have a firewall? I had this on mine and it turned out to be a ZoneAlarm setting.
Jake
More info please, Brian. What browser, IE6? Or what? What OS? XP? Have you recently installed SP2? Tried looking in Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Multimedia 'Play animations in web pages' ?
Shovels
Try checking the following... under advanced in the internet options, is the "play animations" field selected?
Soop Dogg
My OS is XP. The browser is Mozilla Firefox, but I tried IE6 and they don't work there either. Thinking it could be ZoneAlarm Pro as I downloaded it recently.
Soop Dogg
"Play Animations" is checked in ie6 but Firefox doesn't have this option. Won't touch SP2!
Jake
Yeah if it isn't working Firefox or IE it's most likely a firewall issue. Can you turn off or disable ZoneAlarm to test it? RedM
It will be ZA Pro. You need to uncheck the options that block both banner ads and Animations. For me that solved both the animated gif issue and also allowed me to see pics attached to posts.
Soop Dogg
Yep. Just turned ZA off completely and they worked again. Now, where do I find these options......
Jake
Zone Alarm is poo. If you have a decent router with built-in hardware firewall you don't need any of those rubbish software firewalls.
RedM
Yep. Just turned ZA off completely and they worked again. Now, where do I find these options...... On the Privacy screen, hit the Main tab and go to Ad Blocking/custom. The options are in there.
Soop Dogg
But that is what I've got.....and it's always worked well for me,so I decided to upgrade to ZA Pro. Just need to figure out some of its' settings now.
RedM
ZA Pro is fine. It does what you need it to do and doesn't cost as much as a hardware firewall.
Soop Dogg
Cheers Red. I knew I could rely on this board for quick info!
Jake
ZA Pro is fine. It does what you need it to do and doesn't cost as much as a hardware firewall.I thought that too, until I needed a router for networking purposes. The hardware firewall is built-in to the router I bought so it didn't really cost me anything. I wouldn't go back to a software firewall now. YMMV, but nobody can say a software FW is better than a HW one. Set it, forget it. No having to have the latest updates to keep ahead of the hackers. No trying to figure out weird problems with web pages (like this one of Brian's) Works for me.
