Silky Smooth Autobox

Recommended Posts

I've not seen anyone on here mention changing autobox fluid and filters before, so I thought I'd post this up for anyone thinking of doing the same.

My car's just had an autobox fluid/filter change. Its not that it wasn't pretty smooth before, but the 'box now shifts noticeably smoother and significantly more seemlessly than it did before, and the funny rattle from underneath the gearbox has gone too. And as ever, a top job was done by Mark and Paul at Phoenix in Watford :thumbs:

Well worth considering in my opinion

Second that motion! Mine would change gear anytime it wanted, sometimes making it stall!! Changed the fluid and , touch wood, no problems!

Get it done!!!

Hmmm... don't know when the last time was that my autobox fluid was changed. Can I do it myself if I have access to a lift and what fluid/filter should I use? Where can I order these online? Where is the Autobox filter? Thanks for the good poop. You guys make my Supra better with ever post-reply. Cheers. :respekt:

Hi Dude, they did the following;

"Drained automatic gearbox oil. Removed gearbox sump and removed oil strainer. Fitted new oil strainer. Cleaned old sealant off sump. Resealed and refitted sump, refilled gearbox with new oil."

I'm not sure if they flushed, but I know once the sump was removed they left the thing to drip for ages and gave everything a good clean.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know where I can get some type T-IV ATF. I've tried my local Toyota dealership who said they don't stock it and can't order it. I've been round all my local motor factors and other parts places but nowhere has even heard of the stuff.

I'm in Bedfordshire by the way if anyone knows somewhere reasonably close.

I used dexron III on my import supe. Thats what it lists in the autodata book! :rtfm: My motorfactors had plenty in stock, with trade discount was about £3 a litre.

How much did they charge you for fluid ????

Hmm dont want to worry you dude but the trans oil is quite expensive for the right gear from Toyota (type IV) , 5 litres is allmost £50 and they will have lost at least 2 litres from the sump doing that job , its not had a flush as that takes about 3 tins of type IV , you may wanna check what they put in , allthough they may have just bought a job lot of fluid and passed the saving on to you , problem is the Autodata book lists the fluid as Dexron 2 which is wrong (also lists the same for the 6 speed and 5 speed) , if its had Dex 2 it should really now be flushed thru and replaced with Type IV

Dude :cool:

Is it really that nessasary to change the gearbox oil, I have always been told not to on all cars as the gearbox is a sealed unit there is no need unlike an engine of course. Pulling out the dipstick on mine the gear oil is clear and bright. Although its over the max mark perhaps someone may have already done it?

Hehehe.. Hard on the box.. So post scratch and sniff, if it smells burnt, replace the filter and fluid, or do I have to do the whole.. de-seal, take the sump out, flush, clean everything, replace sump, re-seal, fill with $100 worth of fluid, and pump the neighbor's cat ordeal?
