CJ
I recently (as in tonight) installed the Malware Bytes anti malware programm to see if my system was as clean as i thought. I have tried running a scan but it freezes at the same point every time when it gets to the file: C:\recycler\nprotect\02979984.wmd As far as I can see, that is a windows media file and therefore should not be a problem - or am I being naive here? Should I be concerned? If so, how do I get past this freezing up problem? I currently run Eset NOD32 as an anti virus.
michael
Empty your recycle bin and uninstall Norton anti-virus - sounds as though you might have multiple anti-virus packages fighting each other.
CJ
Empty your recycle bin and uninstall Norton anti-virus. It is empty and I do not have Norton installed.
michael
It is empty and I do not have Norton installed. You might not have the whole Norton software suite installed but it's been on there at some point and left bits behind... it does that. 1. Click on the 'Start' button and select the 'Run..' option 2. Copy and paste the following text and click the 'OK' button rmdir /s \\?\C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT If you have the ability to view hidden system files turned on have a look in C:\Recycler and see if the nprotect folder has gone. Rescan and see if that helps. You might get a clash with the malware and anti-virus packages at some point though.
CJ
I downloaded the latest Norton removal tool and ran that. I then tried to run the Malware program again but it froze at the Recycler\NPROTECT part. I then run the c:\recycler\nprotect in the run bar and it brought up the whole folder - so yes, it is still there but i am unsure whether to delete the whole folder as I don't know what it does. Just to add that the Malware program stopped this time at file: C:\recycler\nprotect\02979983 I just looked at that folder, opened it and it is empty. michael
The Norton removal tools don't work very well. It's a folder Norton calls the "protected recycle bin", when you uninstall the software it leaves it behind, if you aren't running Norton you don't need the folder. You might also have nprotect.exe still on there hogging resources.
CJ
I removed that folder and did a search for the .exe file mentioned but came back with file not found. I will now try that Malware program again and let you know what it does.
