Ark
The trouble with the harsh laws and huge number of people falling foul of them, is that the short-term jails fill up very quickly, so there is now a tradition in many of those states for the royal families to grant pardons (complete with an extradition order) on special dates (birthdays, public holidays etc) so each person getting banged up for a few years on these trivialities actually serve a couple of months or even just weeks if they get lucky, before getting let out and kicked out of the country. Ewen
Just got back in. Exhausting but very good fun. I'm never, ever, going to have a drink ever again, I swear. Some questions asked in this thread.... Flew out with Emirates Airlines, they were ok. Stayed at the Madinat Jumeirah, it was spectacular...the size of a small town, the exterior looked like a film set (reminded me of Universal Studios) but overall it was quite simply the most amazing hotel I've ever stayed at. Codiene etc....yes its harsh, but the rules on what is allowed and what isnt are clearly laid out in pre-booking info. I dont understand why these and other everyday medicinal items are so nasty to them, but its their country. Local laws....extremely strict, but within the hotel complex far more relaxed. Rather eyebrow raisingly relaxed actually. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful...although as only 15% of the population of Dubai are actually local, the extremely friendly and helpful people I met were from one of the 200 countries that make up the bulk of the tourism industry and of course actually paid to be. I didnt have time to go to any dives down-town but did visit the Dubai Mall. No time to myself really, will need another visit on my own terms. Other than that, it was afteral a working break....the highlight being a 60 vehicle convoy into the desert (a great time dune climbing etc) all togged up in fancy dress ending in a feast in the middle of the desert. Not many pics yet, but heres a few....V8's and belly dancers included.

Charlotte
No sex on the beach. Is it because, after the long flight, you'll be too tide? Too much sand anyway, ewww.
