Shift light question

bignum

Recommended Posts

I'd like one with an adjustable range. I thought they were gimicky, but when bignum and I drove an ex race 911 GT3 which had shift lights, I realised how useful they can be as an extra indicator. If this is easily DIY-able (and I don't see why it shouldnt' be) then I'd be up for fitting something to my Supe too.

I wonder if I could fit some descrete mini LEDs (with a brightness control so day/night doesn't matter) along the top of the dash edge. Stick a dial somwhere to control the range..

I fitted something similar in my Is200

When i get home i'll see if i can find the circuit i used. But basically its a chip that changes 0-5v pulses from the engine to a linear voltage, (lm2917), plus various capacitors and resistors, then linear voltage to outputs (lm3914).

That looks similar to what I had in mind; I'd only want half a dozen LEDs at most though, to indicate when the revs reach a certain amount, rather than acting like a tachometer as your setup seemed to do. I'd guess the circuit would be very similar? If you don't mind sharing, that would be top.
