dane_stone
Hi I'm thinking of a carear change and for some time now been seriously considering plumbing. I'm 26 and been in the engineering buiness for 10 year a welder/fabricator for 5 years and a design engineer for the rest. I've found some short courses on the net that can be done round work. so I was wondering if any plumbers/anyone could recomend any courses or give any advice or offer me a job . Thanks Dean
peter richards
check out the local job centre see if they have any courses going , theres been a lot of plumbing adds on the telly and that lately , just like the driving courses touting 30k. which is bollocks . as you have a fabricating background should help , what sort of fabing did you do ?. before i did my back in i was a pipe fabricator by trade , so plumbing was easy to pick up for me
Conrad
It depends how you want to become qualified. I went to night College a few years back to do a 2 year Electrician course. 2 nights a week, 3 hours practical and 3 hours math/theory. Personally I found this a little pointless. As I wasn't practicing day in day out what I had learnt at college I'd forget most of it. This is why a 17 year old YTS on day release to college will learn quicker, they're practicing everything they learn at college on the job. And that's the catch 22 - how can an adult take a wage cut to YTS standard? They can't. IMO the best thing to do is what my mate is doing. He starts a 4 month intensive Plumbing course next week, 40 hours a week at a dedicated college. At the end you're fully Corgi qualified - but it costs £4200. dannypunto
im a plumber, well more gas engineer than plumber but i ahve all me plumbing nvq's and like any experianced plumber/gas man will tell u its not paper work that counts, its experiance! so best thing u can do is try find somebody who u can be a dogs body for , pick up the experiance that way and work from there, also if u want the change for the money then its the gas u need which is very expensive to get if u have to pay for the courses out your own pocket. Jamesy W
Hi mate its also worth looking into an Adult Apprenticeship, A few companies up here started doing them a while back. Companies like British Gas. The gas is where the money is.
