Supra_Nish
Hey guys, A few questions about BOVs that hopefully you can help me with: 1) Why are some BOVs attached to a hard pipe/flange etc and some simply replace the stock one in the stock location? 2) Can all BOVs be placed in either location? i.e. can the HKS SSQV be fitted to the stock location (though i've only ever seen it attached to a hard pipe). 3) What is the benefit (if any) of attaching to a hard pipe (if the BOV can be installed either way). 4) Roughly, which popular BOVs (blitz, hks etc) can be fitted in stock location? Thanks!
Alex
1) Because the manufacturers made the kits that way...or if a single/aftermarket twins are fitted you don't have the stock location to reuse. Basically any location before the throttle body will do. 2) Yes if they have the right fitting kit. 3) None really - though the really big racing bovs would never fit in the stock location! 4) HKS SSQV is the most reliable but some don't like the noise it makes. More of a whistle that a whoosh.
Supra_Nish
Thanks Alex, great info. One thing, as far as i can tell BOVs just seem to consist of a few vacuum pipes going in and out. What exactly is in these fitting kits? Is it not just possible to buy, for example, a BOV on its own (not many are advertised with fitting kits) and plumb it in using a few pipes? Or am i missing something?
Alex
If it's for a MKIV it will have a fitting kit. Some even come with a replacement hard pipe. If you wanted one on a hard pipe that didn't come with it you would need a flange welded to the hard pipe. Some silicone hose is pretty much all that mounts the SQV to the stock location...but it's shaped correctly. If you come to the next pub meet then you'll be able to see a stock mounted sqv and a hardpipe mounted one.
Supra_Nish
Correctly shaped silicon, i knew there had to be something! I'm basically asking because on ebay etc you can grab a bargain BOV but it obviously wouldn't come with a mkiv specific fitting kit, so i guess i would just be wasting my time? Pub meet would be great but i'm in london now. Still have flat there though so maybe i can time an inspection just right so i can make one! Alex
You maybe wasting your time for another reason with a generic bov as :- 1) They might not flow enough to dump 300Hp of air quickly enough 2) They may have weak springs which will lead to them not staying shut. The SQV is the most reliable due to it's "reversed" operation its a pull valve and not a push one...this means it will seal better and more reliably than push types. I've had 2 SQV's now (2 different Sup's) and I've had no probs at all...they maybe expensive but they work! Pay expensive, pay once...pay cheap pay twice! Supra_Nish
Christ you sound like a trader Alex! Sound advice indeed. The HKS is most likely what i'll go for, just needed to know if i could get one "off the shelf" from some malaysian on ebay or a supra specific one. Alex
Trader me? Never - I'd never sell anything...well other than the most exclusive Body Kit for the Supra, ever (which is still dragging on...got 3 buyers though lol) Nish, Like I said if you're at the next pub meet we can go though it there...but no I wouldn't skimp on anything in that engine bay - leave that to the Nova crowd! MONKEYmark
You maybe wasting your time for another reason with a generic bov as :- Pay expensive, pay once...pay cheap pay twice! i payed expensive for a blitz bov that failed on me, wont do it again. running the twin stock bov mod. pay expensive once. never pay it again, yorkshire way cheap as chips
Alex
lol - there's always one. (But yeah I've heard the blitz ones are best avoided...)
