Car Importing from Japan: FINISHED???
SirCharlesworth replied to Hy-Performance's topic in Supra Chat
I almost bought a supra in japan 2 nights ago from a company called provide cars. I'm glad i didnt if this is the case!! Surely not though? I know about all the type-approval stuff now, but was gonna buy a car over 10 years old to miss the sva anyway. Strange stuff- i will be watching this thread carefully:conf: -
suprarz- it's odd because i still get all the details of the oneprice.net stuff, but i dont get any auction details anymore and these were really where i wanted to get the car from! Aerotops are unfortunately not for me, I love manual gears too much but its a nice idea and i know my girlfriend would love me to have an aerotop instead. But she hates autos too!!!
-
How much are you asking though? Incedently, i saw a supra with whifbitz on the plate a week or so ago at a customer of mine- was a facelift on a P plate i thnk and had been retrimmed by the look of it!
-
Thanks for all your opinions guys, i appreciate it. It's nice to have help in this situation. I have been looking at importing myself, through auto square. But they have stopped sending me auction details for some reason. It's amazing how much you can save by personally importing! I'm guessing the dealer probably paid about 4k for that (dog of a) supra in japan and wants to make a fast buck! I'm tempted to go back and say yeah I'll give you 7 and a half grand cash for it now and you can cut your losses. but i think he'd tell me where to go anyway. So it's probably a bad idea, besides- I *should* be able to import nice tt6 for no more than 9k. It's just the wait of the shipping that i don't like. But i dont think im gonna find any decent black tt6's over here for that price so it's gonna have to be the import route
-
so i guess thats bad then- any listings at all on the net of what its for?

The roll cage wouldnt even be an issue, my pulsar had it declared and it hardly touched the insurance: I declared all mods and ended up with a sheet that looked like this Interior/exterior mdifications Wheel/Tyre modifications Suspension modifications Engine/Carbuerettor modifications Exhaust Modifications That covered everything, and about everything more i could do to the car!! With regards to the supra- general concencus seems to be that its a heap. I was told it was an RZ-S, but i didn't think they made them in 1993. It didnt have active spoiler so wasn't a GZ but it did have electric drivers seat - does that make it an RZ? The guy has a few *overpriced* supras for sale- see this link http://www.extremejapanesemotors.co.uk/ the cars are straight from auction as even the pics he uses are the aucton pics!!! And what does that warning triangle come on for?!!

Went to have a look at a freshly imported and unregistered tt6 yesterday. Was severely unimpressed with value for money so i want to ask you guys opinions. As far as i can tell, the car had the following spec- Some kind of cone filter. SBC-iD Power Meter-iD Blitz boost gauge HKS Turbo Timer A nice MD/CD head unit Kakimoto exhaust HKS Coilovers 6 Point roll cage (the interior had been butchered to fit this- rear trim panels hacked around) Alloy wheels (non standard) OE skirts and spats. I believe those were the only mods, the seller (a car importer) told me it was running 1.2bar boost, which equaled 450bhp which i find hard to believe. Now here comes the killer- the car is for sale for 12950, has done 112k(km) and has the following faults: firstly, the hazard triangle stays on in the rev counter (dont know why this is ), pretty much every panel on the car needs painting or has already been painted (badly), there is rust!!! at the bottom of the drivers door, round the windscreen, and around the boot area! Paint is peeling off the skirts and the whole car (black) looks dull. He told me he'll get all the paintwork done once i put a deposit on, but i know rust always comes back and why should i put my cash into something i dont know will look good. He is trying to justify the price by the mods but i dont think its worth it. Do supras rust much? I have attached a pic of the car, you can see the paint coming off the skirts in it!! It's in ipswich if anyone wants to look for real.

And there you were, thinking by getting rid of the GTi-R you wouldnt have to worry about this sort of thing any more Hope you get it sorted soon!
-
I know this sounds odd.... but it is deffinately knock/pinking/pre-ignition/det you are experiencing? and not some kind of bearing failure on the bottom end? You could always get the car dyno'd to make sure it isnt running lean anyway, but i wouldn't know how to check the timing
-
just to clarify- an ecotec valve is a one way valve which is usually put in line with the vacuum feed to the brake servo (although it can be tapped directly into the inlet manifold) allowing air in from the outside world They *claim* to give better fuel consumption and performance. The reality is- they take advantage of the safety aspect (rich running) of a standard cars fuel map and lean it up by letting unmetered air into the system. Obviously no use whatsoever in a turbo car as the manifold will be under pressure as soon as you're driving, and i wouldn't touch one on anything anyway to be honest. I would rather pay extra and get a car properly mapped up. Besides, having what is essentially a leak in the servo feed can't really help the braking situation

seems a bit of a shame to have someone else do it considering im an electronic engineer
-
I know i'm off topic- but those blue led's look really good. Think i'll have to do the same when i get mine is there a guide anywhere?
-
Yeah i'm deffinately up for that- send away
-
I was under te impression that drivetrain losses were calculated by the over-run once throttling off on the rolling road. But i'm probably way out
-
Yeah it does have a gain setting- i think maybe it's down to air pressure rather than just heat this week though, because my car has dsbc and has been hitting the limiter tons this week when normally it wouldnt.

Ahhhh, so i won't be seeing the gto anymore then? I never even knew that race got filmed, would love to see it though!! I wonder if i can borrow the tape off pete and rip it to my computer. Have you seen it? I hope my flames were entertaining I'll have to have a word about it. I will have to have a look at your supra at some point too- have you noticed how many of them there seem to be round town at the moment? All fairly plain looking though.

well i've still got the pulsar at the mo because the lad wanted to take it away on an uncleared cheque so i'm just waiting for cash- still sitting on his deposit though so it *should* be sold. Then i'll be ordering the supra from japan- it's bon holiday over there at the mo so i can't do much anyway. I saw pete a week or so ago, and i saw him drive past not too long ago too, but have yet to see it close up. I'll keep my eyes peeled for richie too- havent seen him for ages, or wing for that matter. Did the gto go somewhere local or is it going far?
-
so has he sold the gto then? no more late night arse whoopings down the bypass for him now then in my pulsar- he'll be doing the whooping:blink:
-
i post just not very often as i dont really speak unless i have something to say. not to mention the fact i feel rude posting without paying, and i dont have a supra yet either because i need to get one imported
-
thanks for that advice supra rz: I'll be in touch soon cashpoint: yeah i did PM james about the convert from gtir to sup and see how he got on, was going to pm you too but had too much going on in life with crap! I was charlie boy on the gtir boards- i'm just charlie on there now because i got old
-
Well i took a deposit on my pulsar gti-r yesterday, which means i can now start seriously looking for my supra. I have heard of auctions in southampton as the cars come off the boats which offer good value for money, is this true?? Also, did anyone privately import? And who does this? I am looking for a black GZ manual or RZ manual, probably a 93 car as i haven't got unlimited funding. Hoping to find one with a couple of modifications too: exhaust primarily- maybe airfilter and bov too. Also would like the sideskirts and some better wheels, but i don't know what stuff comes up? Supra here i come!!!!! Cheers, Charlie

I wouldn't take anything out in the snow that was half decent- firstly think of all the other "bad" drivers who can hit you! secondly- snow usually = gritters, which = rock salt! Rock salt isn't the most friendly thing to have plastered all over your car! The phrase "fair weather car" springs to mind!

I just done a search to see if i could come up with any suppliers of the aerial- cutting out mercedes and therefore reducing costs. http://www.hettich-promodul.com/engl/index.html These people stock an aerial they say is for the slk- presumably its the older type though because itdoesn't look the same ... Just found these people in japan http://www.benz-parts.co.jp/r170page.html they have slk aerials for just over £45- thats gonna be plus duty and vat i should think though
