Terrible smell from lower vents

When I turn my air flow to the lower vents whether it is A/C or heat there is a horrid smell like a dead wet dog that comes out. i suspect it is mildew but is there any way to get rid of it? Or has anyone else had this problem?

Air con on max with blowers on full for a while can often help (you should do this at regular intervals anyway) but to get rid you'll need to get an air con specialist to run some fog through the system or have a go at doing this yourself with one of the Comma cleaners that you set off and leave (Halfords sell them).

I've used the comma cleaners as well and they seem to do the job. Once you have got the system clean, put a few tumble dryer sheets underneath the seats, they won't last long 2-3 days before needing changing but they are good at providing a fairly neutral smell.
