Wez
Hey All, Just wondering who has used XP or Vista x64 and want to know what you think.
Muffleman
Good question mate, I've been putting off the change from XP to Vista because, well, XP finally works !!!
DamanC
32 bit based OS's for games. 64bit it if you can find the drivers
JustGav
Did try Vista 64 on my media system, took it off, while it may have been every so slightly quicker it was very difficult to find apps that took advantage of it, and the codecs for 64 bit aren't exactly the most stable or easiest to find. Wez
I will stick with my XP 32bit then Anyone tried XP 64bit?
JustGav
I will stick with my XP 32bit then Anyone tried XP 64bit? Same driver base, same issues pretty much... I did like XP64 till I tried to get printer drivers way back but then gave up. Same issues you would have with Vista. What do you mainly use the machine for? JustGav
If you are doing gaming, you are probably better sticking with XP32 unless the game specifically needs some silly Direct X10 from Vista.

Is DX10 due to be released for XP? Its been available for download on torrent for some time as is SP3.
Daston
Got both no problems with 64bit drivers these days
Ric
DX10 isnt going to be released for XP is it? as its one of the reasons to upgrade to vista whenever ive downloaded it from torrents its just dx9 rebadged As for vista 64 ive tried it while running games, you loose a few FPS hardly noticable but some games, ie Bioshock and Gears of war (from what ive tried) hate vista 64, constantly freezing/crashing Wait till there is more support for the 64bit version Drivers arnt usually a problem anymore its program compatibility
Scott
Got 5 PC's in the house. Only got 1 thats 64bit but i put Vista64 on it just so that if i needed to use a 64bit app. I could. Your going to have the same sort of issues regardless of whether you go for Vista or XP so if i were in your shoes, i would go for Vista. Its nicer Scott =op
Pete
Whatever you do, don't go XP64 bit.

Pete
I thought they were dropping Vista? Eh? By 'they' do you mean MS? Where have you heard such nonsense?
Supragal
I assumed they means MS but it might have just been some big companies. I wasn't really listening. I hate Vista. Apart from the Voodoo dolls.
stevie_b
If you wanted to try it and don't mind tinkering, you could create another partition on your hard disk and install Vista there (assuming you have access to a copy already). You might even be able to hold Vista in a single large container file, rather like some people do with Linux.
TLicense
I've had Vista 64 for about 9 month's or so I guess. Initially it was a real pain in the arse, limited driver support from Nvidia, struggle to find drivers for old hardware like printers etc. Personally, if I were going to go through again, and I was building a gaming machine, I would just go with the 32 bit version as a lot more games are developed on 32 bit machines. In fact, I've yet to see any game that has been developed to take advantage of the 64 bit processor.
Daston
Crytek did Farcry 64 and they are doing the same with crysis. Plus Company of heros, Suprime Commander.
Scott
Erm, i'm pretty sure that his only options are 64-bit. So, out of the 2, i would choose Vista. He has a 64 bit processor. Unless its AMD it won't let him install a 32bit OS. Wouldn't let me anyway lol. Scott =op
Pete
Intel Core 2 Duo is 64 bit CPU and runs 32bit OS.

Scott
Never had any issues with my pc. Says something about the OS not being compatible with the System. Same error comes up if you try to put x64 on a x32 machine. I know AMD 64s will take 32bit OS Scott =op
Wez
I am currently running XP 32bit and was wondering about 64bit so I can use the extra memory, I have 4gb DDR2 1066Mhz but 32bit XP will only 3.5gb. Think I will stick with 32bit, seems to be going alright now that I have added an 8800GT
