Without protection, it was bound to happen eventually!

I refer you to this statement, from another thread:

Top Tip: Don't ever use your debit card on the Internet. Only use c/cards, you can live without them, but not live with an empty bank account.

Me: "I've been a bit lucky then, as I don't have any credit cards. I may order one, just to do what you've mentioned. God forbid if someone clears out my bank account!"

I checked my bank account online this morning, only to find it nearly completely devoid of any money, including my overdraft! Three payments totalling around £4,500 have been earmarked and approved by the bank to be debited from my account over the past couple of days!

Considering the amount of purchases I make online, I've never experienced anything like this. According to my bank, Lloyds TSB, they can't recover the money until the debits have actually happened. I'm amazed they can't stop them going out, like you would a cheque etc.

Anyway, my debit card has been stopped, and will be issued with a new one shortly, but as a warning to others; if you are making purchases online only use a credit card (as Pete says), as at least you'll still have your money in your account while you sort out the problem.

I've had to raid my other piggy banks to top my account up until this is sorted, and hopefully they won't get their mucky hands on that cash too!

Bugger :(

same sort of thing happend to me a while back. nearly £5700 in 2 payments taken out. its gutting. and it was all Paypal's fault!!!

I linked my Paypal to my debit account, I thought it would be ok with Paypal acting in between, no ?

Guess I had better remove my debit account from my Paypal account and assign my Credit Card to it  And quickly.....

I ditched my credit cards a couple of years ago and closed my paypal account also this year. I now either by cheque when dealing with companies with website or I physically go to the shop and pay cash!

Too many scammers and crooks about these days!

Unless I am dealing with a reputable organisation, Asda, Tesco etc then I am not risking it!! Touch wood I have never had a problem with things like this.....

Unlucky Andrew - this close to Xmas too?

Any idea how this happened??

I don't have a credit card and only ever use my debit card - I know I'm not disciplined enought for a CC.

My paypal account is set up as a DD too, is this how your details got leaked Edd?

Well until Lloyds track where the payments are going to they can't stop them, or know where they're going. They will bounce the money back to my account as soon as that happens, allegedly! It will help them pinpoint the account, and hopefully the guilty party too.

I'm exactly like you in not being able to discipline myself with a credit card, that's why I paid them all off and cut them up, but now I'll have to set myself a monthly credit budget and make sure I pay it all off each time. It will be hard, knowing its nearly Xmas and all that, but I'll never buy anything online again with a debit card. Even though I've checked the 'padlock' on the sites I've bought stuff from recently, you never know who's watching.

I've made a couple of normal 'shop' purchases over the past week, and I'll have to go back and ask them if they've had anything untoward happen with their accounts too.

A bit of a nightmare, but hopefully it can be resolved swiftly enough. Its lucky I do my banking online, as I was having a quick look this morning, because I'd hate to have been caught short one day with absolutely no money!

I don't think it was Paypal, as I checked that account earlier, but maybe illegal payments could be hidden from view. Just the thought of that is scary enough!

I read the thread title and thought it was a 'baby on the way' story. :D

Hope you get it sorted soon, think It'd drive me mad.

When I was thinking of a title, the words just sort of came out like that :)

I was going to clarify it wasn't a baby story, but it grabbed your attention didn't it?! ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well just as an update, I've nearly got all the money back now.

Some went to an online audio visual company, another to Dell (two well specced laptops!) and two substantial payments to charity!

Anyway, as I jumped on it so quickly, Lloyds were able to bounce the money back to me before any goods were dispatched from the companies, so at least they didn't lose out too. I'm just waiting for the charity ;)

I was really impressed on how Lloyds managed to sort all this out within the week, but I've learnt my lesson. :)
