stevie_b
I've got an unmodified NA supra. It loses oil gradually (to give you an idea of quantities, I need to put in very approximately a pint once every 3 weeks). I believe that the culprit are the valve stem seals not being as good as they were 14 years/100,00 miles ago! I currently use 10w-40 oil. Does anyone use anything thicker to prevent oil loss, or would that lead to other problems? I think I won't go thicker than 10w-40, but interested in opinions. Also, how expensive is it to get the valve stem seals reconditioned/replaced?
Chris Wilson
Try some 15 60 if you like, but there's no real fix other than a head rebuild. If the seals are bad the guides will be, too, If you do the guides the seats will need re cutting. If you cut the seats the valves need re shimming. About 1500 all in, done properly with all new gaskets and seals. If you don't expect to keep it long you could just have stem seals fitted. Some places will attempt it with the head still on., this isn't one of them
