1JZ engine & R154 gearbox

My current is on it's way out on my soarer so I'm looking for another :D and I'm converting my project soarer to a manual too, I've considered a 2jz and getrag (already have the getrag) but I think i'll sell that soon as I won't be going over 600bhp anymore with it :)

cheers

Tom.

1JZ...... easy (it's that time of year after all)

Soarer (or even JZA70) R154? You'll be lucky :) Go for a MA70 R154 and a 1JZ bellhousing.

There are a couple of manual converted Soarers on Driftworks as well.

yeah my first plan is to find a mk3 turbo to break, I take it the uk ones are the MA70's? and do both turbo and non turbo use the same box?

Cheers Maz will look into it :)

MA70 is the 3-litre, the turbo uses the R154, N/A uses the W58.

You need a JZ to R154 bellhousing from Toyota (Driftmotion in the US have the bellhousing listed on their site), and a JZ flywheel. I think the MA70 clutch fits. The Supra box in a Soarer puts the gear lever too far forward, some people bend it into an "S" (Ajaz in the thread I posted above had the remote extended for his 1.5JZ). You can buy the clutch pedal and the manual centre tunnel piece from Toyota. Have to bridge the auto interlock so that you can start the car. There is some sort of warning light issue when the ECU is no longer attached to the auto, but I can't remember if there's a way around it. You could probably find a manual ECU on Yahoo Japan (I know of a couple of Aussies who could get one for you), or you can go standalone.

The Aussie forums (Soarer Central, ALSC, Toymods) are good sources of info.

EDIT (just saw tooquicktostop's post)

2JZ drops straight in. You can use the 1JZ ECU, sensors, and loom, I believe, but then you obviously can't run sequential turbos. 1.5JZ if you have 1JZ stuff you want to use, otherwise TTC or single.

AFAIK......

W58 from a Mk4 Supra N/A would mate to the 1JZ crankcase. One from a Mk3 Supra would need the JZ bellhousing. Might have the same issue with the gear lever position. I think there are some Soarer TTs in OZ which have been converted with the W58. Ask on the Soarer Central forum.

yes the w58 does mate to the 1jz, and like gareth says a mk3 w58 will require the jz bell housing for sure so your better off getting the mk4 one, slightly better internals, newer and is straight fit.

as for the r154 ma70/7mgte one, yes you only need the bell housing but theres a shit load of modding to be done on selector shaft and housing and rear mounting as they are different too! not forgetting its length which is smaller so youll need a modded propshaft too!

FYI theres 8 mounting holes in the jz flywheel and six on the 7mgte one so be carefull what you buy, although the splines are same on gearbox unlike the tt 2jz which have less splines and are bigger so flywheel has to be from 1jz too not 7mgte unless you mod the mk4 w58[n/a] flywheel by moving the lugs and use the 7mgte clutch, still theres quite a decent range of clutches out there since i did my conversion which should be adequate for the n/a push system, which means you could run the r154 box with jz bell housing,on w58 flywheel and uprated clutch no probs, but still the pull system is loads better for the torque of these motors.

IMHO keep the getrag unless youve got plenty of time, money and Ibuprofen
