wez_p
i'm specifically finding it hard to resist this one in particular http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=088715&category_oid=# that's on display in our local Currys, but in general the Samsungs just seem to stand out massively in comparison to a lot of others. 52" seems a little extravagant but but they also have a 46" & 40" variant too which seem just as nice. but the 52" would also look sooo nice with the 360 & the PS3 apparently the only difference between the M86 & the M87 is a little metal strip along the bottom, i.e. a cosmetic difference, but you need to make sure that the firmware is up to date on them to get the latest glitch free functionality
Ark
Not that one, but I've got a Samsung LCD which is the nuts. But unless you've going to sit 40 metres away from the television, 52" might just be a teensy bit large.
bromy
We have the 40" M86 no problems, just use the settings off http://www.avforums.com to get the best out of the picture.

bromy
how do they seem to fair with non-HD feeds, e.g. normal Sky etc? I think ok..... although the general concensusis is to go for the Sony. It does take a while to adjust from viewing a CRT picture to the LCD. We also have Sky HD and the picture is fantastic. I would buy another Sammy
Pabs
it seems that these Samsung LCD's are highly rated, but according to the threads on avforums it also seems that many different variations and quality units (although the same model number) exist. Also seems to be some mention of almost 1 in 5 being faulty, or dodgy one way or another. I still think it's one I'll go for though! Been looking into it for a while. wez_p
aye i think it's the one to go for - just looking at each of the others on display they just stand out to me. i've got a Sony 42" rear projection at the mo so i imagine the picture quality will be a massive jump others i've been looking at for anyone who's still shopping around are (prices were just the Currys prices, definitely NOT the cheapest available!): Philips 42" lcd, 42PFL7962, 1299.99 Samsung 40" lcd, LE40F86BD, 1399.99 Samsung 50" plasma, PS50Q96HD, 1299.99 Samsung 46" lcd LE46M86BD, 1549.
Scott
If you have that sort of money to spend i would recommend Panasonic. They are miles ahead. If your looking for 40" + i would go for Plasma though. Panasonic 1080p all the way Scott =op
Soonto_HAS_soop
That is the TV I have and I have to say that I'm very impressed with it. The picture quality for non HD is good, once it has been tuned a little, and the 1080p Blu-ray movies are outstanding. Changing to HD for the PS3 is also a huge jump in quality. The amount of TV for the price is fantastic and it is 1080p. I bought mine from Pixmania about 6 weeks ago, and got it for £150 less than the currys price - although I can't find it on their site now (pixmania are a warehousing company for currys I believe - it's there guys that delivered it)
Lebsteif
i have the Samsung L37M78BD and it is a great LCD, i sit only 2 meters away from it and the size is just right. I would suggest the 40" at least if you sitting at 2,5 meters. I use the Samsung H360 for HDTV and SDTV and the quality is great.
Pabs
The Samsung F86 seems to be a good tv as well, but also seems that people cannot justify the extra money over the M86/M87 for the little extra they gain. (Apparently the 100Hz isn't all it's cracked up to be) Almost certain I'll get the Samsung after xmas in the Sales (I'm assuming it'll still be about then) - not just because it might be cheaper, but it's kinda a joint xmas pressie! wez_p
If your looking for 40" + i would go for Plasma though why plasma? i've always noticed the motion blur straight away on football & movies with the plasmas and i was under the impression it was just the quality of black that was what the LCDs lacked in comparison, which the Samsung M86/M87 was pretty good at I bought mine from Pixmania about 6 weeks ago, and got it for £150 less than the currys price - although I can't find it on their site now (pixmania are a warehousing company for currys I believe - it's there guys that delivered it) nice one mate, i'd seen their price which was a bit cheaper but wasn't confident on a name i'd not used before i have the Samsung L37M78BD and it is a great LCD, i sit only 2 meters away from it and the size is just right. I would suggest the 40" at least if you sitting at 2,5 meters. I use the Samsung H360 for HDTV and SDTV and the quality is great. what's a H360? i'm probably about 2-2.5 metres away so i'm starting to think the 52 is too big now The Samsung F86 seems to be a good tv as well, but also seems that people cannot justify the extra money over the M86/M87 for the little extra they gain. (Apparently the 100Hz isn't all it's cracked up to be) i've always disliked the 100hz picture but not seen one going in HD i don't think, unless the LE40F86BD was running it & i didn't notice. Can you switch off the 100hz bit?

Can you switch off the 100hz bit? Good question, and no idea I'm afraid. But I believe the F86 is a good £300 more than the M86/87, so for that reason alone I wouldn't get one. Lebsteif
what's a H360? i'm probably about 2-2.5 metres away so i'm starting to think the 52 is too big now i've always disliked the 100hz picture but not seen one going in HD i don't think, unless the LE40F86BD was running it & i didn't notice. Can you switch off the 100hz bit? The H360 is a cable reciever for digital TV, it's a HDTV reciever and scales up the quality of the normal tv signal as well. http://www.samsung.com/nl/products/digitalrecievers/hdcablereceiver/images/dcb-h360r_l.jpg I could not find it on the uk samsung website, perhaps it's not for sale in the UK [Edit:] i see i'ts only for the dutch market. The 100HZ thing is possible to switch off.
Ark
what's a H360? i'm probably about 2-2.5 metres away so i'm starting to think the 52 is too big now 2.5 metres, you want to look at 32" - 37" and stop thinking the willy-waving big numbers. It'll save you a shit load of cash too.
Alex
I've got a 10ft throw from the sofa to the TV...and I'll be going for a 40-42" screen. Right now I've settled for now on the Panasonic Plasma 1080p TH42PZ70 - £1079 through Hughes or for £50 a month on rental. This screen is capable of true 24FPS playback for the best quality BD playback and it even looks good upscaling a Std Def picture - even sport. But I might yet go for an LCD and if I do it will be a Sony 40"...why, well, it's got a better upscaler than a samsung so it will look v.good all the time. The KDL-40W3000 again does true 24fps playback - which means the HD DVD's and BD's look amazing. Colours are vibrant and here's the clincher, it uses HALF the power of the Panasonic Plasma...250W vs 500w! LCD's are cheaper to run/own but Plasma's give the nicer picture. If I wasn't bothered about 1080p I'd be looking at the 40" Pioneer Kuro PXD428(or something like that) Saying all that like I say I'm at the moment looking at the PZ70, cause it does everything well, it'll be hooked upto an HTPC with BD and HD-DVD drive in it, and an Onkyo TX-SR875 (the best amp in the world atm sub £1k) which does it's own upscaling using a HQV-Reon chip. I'll need to fit a wind turbine to keep my electricity costs under control!!!
Willson
Thought I would put up my intentions on the subject. Basically I want a 40ish" flat screen for watching mainly SD. From reading the AVForums, it looks like plasma with 720 is best for SD so that is what I am probably going for. Cheap too, especially compared to the figures posted. http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/543186/art/samsung/ps42q96hd-plasma-screen.html?srcid=3&Partenaire=pricerunner&CodePromo=oui edit - I guess you guys are probably well into the whole HD thing though

I was honestly LCD all the way until the Plasma's started getting their game up. To around 37" LCD is untouchable. After that the Plasma's start to take the lead. Panasonic do both LCD and Plasma TV's >40" but if you read their website they recommend going for the Plasma's even though the LCD's are more expensive. mwilkinson
I have a 3 month old 40" LE40M87BDX. I spent ages chewing over sizes, manufacturers, plasma vs LCD and in the end chose this. I spent hours in shops looking at various images on numerous TV's. As far as I was concerned the Sony's although good (same screens as the Samsungs!!) most defintely did not warrant the extra £200+. With blue ray my TV is franky amazing although with standard sky the image can be patchy, but what do you expect buying a 1080p tv!! i have had no problems with my tv. My father in law has just spent in excess of £6000 on a home cinema setup which had to be professionally installed. He has a pioneer 50" plasma and I would say that it is no better than my TV. Although his surround sound is epic and destroys my internal organs when the sub-woofer kicks off. The Samsungs are not the best, but I think they offer superb value for money. They are also in my opinion the best looking tv's. As for plasma vs LCD, at least I can lay my LCD tv flat to transport it without damaging it!! tichkent
Just to add - definitely check out dixons online (http://www.dixons.co.uk) for prices on Samsung LCDs. A _lot_ cheaper than Currys, and if you enter "SAVE5" (or if that doesn't work try "GIMME5") for the promotion code you'll get 5% off. I just ordered a Samsung LE40M86BD for £750 (including delivery). Can't wait. Now just gotta decide what DVD player to get (current favourite is the Pioneer DV-400, shortly followed by the Samsung DVD-HD870 and Philips DVP5980 - anyone got any of these players? any recommendations?). wez_p
thanks for all the responses guys - i ended up visiting Practical Hi-Fi in my lunch the other day & came home with the Pioneer PDP-428XD after seeing the 50" version in action & seeing what hi-fi's review etc. most pleased with it
steb9780
I have just ordered a Toshiba 42" REGZA or REZGA 1080p LCD, it's the X-series one but can't remember the exact model number. I'll let you know what it's like when it comes.
Pabs
I'm still finding it hard to beat the Samsung - looking at specs, reviews, and the quality of it. Hopefully it'll be cheaper after xmas! (Not knowing my luck recently though...)
