chassis damge question

Hi guy's, my mate was looking at a supra for sale around his area and when he had a look underneath he said the chassis (runs down each side of the car) had a dent in it half way down the car. Is this something to worry about? Is any chassis damge regarded as 'write off' if you like or is it only a problem if it affects the car (like the chassis being twisted). He said the best description he could give was that it looked like someone had jacked the car up by the chassis and that the jack had left a dint about the size of a jack head on the bottom of the chassis leg. He said that the owner had never had a problem with the car at all and it drives fine. What do you think?

Cosmetically it's horrible and a real pet hate of mine, but unless the rail is crushed more than, say, half it's original depth, and the floor pan also distorted, it's unlikely to make any noticeable difference. Fixing it would entail welding in a new chassis rail, a MAJOR job. To me the car would have to be cheap, but as i say, it would really bug the hell out of me, far more than a big dent in an exterior panel.

There's one main chassis rail per side, but parts of it are double skinned and hence stronger. Treat all modern chassis rails or parts of the shell itself as if made of eggshell, and you won't go far wrong. You might have jacked a 1970's car up on the chassi rails with impunity, but on these paper thin CAD made things they are no thicker than they absolutely need to be, as they are obscenely overweight with all the *rap we are told we cannot live without, and the weight for these gizmos has to come off the shell.
