T2 MSW
RobSheffield and I were fitting my Nur spec last weekend and rob pointed out some damage on the back of the torque convertor, nether of us were sure if this was a major issue or not. Looking for some input on this issue to guage if its repairable or if I need to replace the convertor? Its looks worse than it is in the pics but there is a definate hole aprox 5mm across. Its right on the natural curve of the convertor.
Robert
Someone use it for target practice , not leaking any fluid?
T2 MSW
lol does look like that I would have thought it would leak but there is non on the floor in the garage where the car is parked every night. Does the supra warn you if the autobox fluid is low? I would go and check the level but its pitch black outside.
tDR
I'd replace it. As I understand it, torque converters work through centrifugally forced fluid transfer through vanes inside - that damage could interfere with that and I suspect it'd be unbalanced being potentially damaging to the transmission. Cheers, Brian.
Jake
errrr, that's not a torque converter. Its the gearbox bell housing, isn't it?
Matt H
no expert but that seems really wierd, trying to think how something like that could occur?

Teach me to pay attention to the pics - it is indeed the autobox bellhousing. Has whatever took that chunk out of it penetrated through and damaged the TC inside? Cheers, Brian. Phew I thought that but didnt want to post as Im not technical. The torque convertor is more of 2 circles put together like so; ---> ()
tDR
no expert but that seems really wierd, trying to think how something like that could occur? Going by the pics you can see the autobox sump and the exhaust downpipe along with the auto fluid cooler pipes so the damage is at the part most exposed to the road - a great big rock chucked up by the front wheels at speed might be enough to do it or by bottoming out the car on a speed hump or something at that point, like those ones you get that only take up the middle part of a lane and you're always tempted to straddle them. Cheers, Brian.

T2 MSW
Not sure what has cause the damage and I have not hit anything so I can only assume it was done before I bought the car. Ah ok did not realise it was the bell housing my bad. Not sure if anything has been damanged internally but im thinking this is why the gear changes are lumpy and that the gear oil I have ordered is not going to resolve that issue? RobSheffield
Not the torque convertor itself, but the housing has the torque convertor within it. (not fantastic on autoboxes think i called it a torque convertor housing which may have confused Mr Mike ) It looked like a weld....
Homer
Looks to me like the box and bellhousing has fallen off a jack at some point and hit something hard. Obviously it needs filling otherwsise it'll get crud in there, some metal filler (pikey option, but should work) or a weld would do the trick. T2 MSW
So can anyone recommend somewhere to get this welded then? Also is a little bit of oil on the thread of the spark plugs ok? Changed them this evening, theres not loads just a bit, plugs look fine, not all black like they have been burning oil.
