Car ran out of fuel last week, put £10 in, still will not start, do not know why, starter motor is ok and making all the right noises, have tried dragging car with a van, still will not fire, any ideas anyone. The battery in the factory key has fallen out. Don't know if you need it in to start the car....imobiliser or something??

Short answer re battery, YES!

Alternators need to be running at about 750RPM to produce 12 volts and a decent current.....thats equiv to qn engine RPM of about 500Rpm

When a car is running, power is normally supplied to all components by the alternator and only "tops-up" the battery by charging it as you drive along.

Please see the starter circuit page I have hopefully uploaded for you.
