Guest yoshi_v300
I'm considering buying a car recently imported from japan with HKS-FCon. It has some sort of record/play device I guess is for datalogging. My question is this - is it ready to rock or will I need it re-mapped/checked out? I presume you can't alter the settings without a laptop etc.....
Nic
The F-CON is a good ECU, but it can only be mapped by an approved HKS dealer. Can you find out which model of F-CON it is as there are a few different versions. The current versions are: HKS F-CON iS http://www.hks-power.co.jp/products/electronics/com/img/is-1.jpg HKS F-CON V Pro http://www.hks-power.co.jp/products/electronics/com/img/fcon_v_pro_image.gif The device you mention may be the F-CON Navigator, which allows you to view and control some of the F-CON features. If it is a Navigator then the F-CON is probably not the Pro version, as HKS has only recently released a version of the Navigator to work with the Pro. Guest yoshi_v300
Thanks for the reply. It seems likes it's one of the older ones (not Pro) Can I simply unplug it if it gives me a headache? I have a TOMS ecu I could put in instead. I presume the ECU is mapped already from Japan, will it be OK or will it need a re-map? I intend to install an Air-fuel ratio meter anyway to check it. Nic
It will have been mapped to run on Japanese fuel, which may be different RON rating to the fuel you use there. The only way to tell would be to fit an AFR gauge and check things. The F-con comes with it's own wiring loom, so it is easy to remove. Is the car still running stock turbos and injectors? If it has bigger injector and/or turbos, then you will need some way to control the fueling/timing.
Guest yoshi_v300
The car is 'alledgedly' running stock twins. I don't have a problem with 100octane as I always chuck in some Millers + Optimax anywayz. I have no idea if the injectors or fuel pump have been upgraded (the seller is a clueless importer, no surprise I know more about the car than he does ) I would 'suspect' if you went to the trouble of HKS F Con you would do the injectors and pump. I would always run air/fuel ratio meter (had it on previous car). So, let's look at this scenario : I unplug HKS F-Con, chuck in my TOMS ecu 1.0bar setting....how would bigger injectors react to that? Mike B
So, let's look at this scenario : I unplug HKS F-Con, chuck in my TOMS ecu 1.0bar setting....how would bigger injectors react to that? Dude, i would get the car setup! I had an old Fcon on my silver car when I bought it from Japan.. it was totally standard otherwise, and I could hear it det badly driving on optimax when I just lightly powered up. They threw that unit away- no-one programs the old f-con, thor replaced it with an emanage. An easy cheap answer to getting the car set up properly and easily. I had hopes that my f-con and fmic denoted that the car had hybrids as well, but it was just stock tubbies and 440 inj. If you are going to mess around then you need an afr guage at the very least. Guest yoshi_v300
That's good advice Mike. I guess I can kinda see the FCON as a bonus, but if it isn't running properly then it's a hinderance. At least it's on a harness so I can unplug it.
Mike B
a hinderance. At least it's on a harness so I can unplug it. when your pistons melt on a long pull in 6th it a hiderance allright! but the Loom is handy, it lets you install other piggybacks easily without having to crawl about in the footwell. The car may probably run faster on the stock ecu, and definately safer on uk fuel, so I'd unplug it until you can get someone to give it an experienced setup. Guest yoshi_v300
My plan would be to run Optimax + Millers, low boost. Then install my air-fuel ratio meter and check I'm not running lean. Sadly there is no rollin' road near me I can trust...I'd have to make a big trip downsouth to THOR or whatever.
