ChrisSZ
Gonna have to have a go at this very shortly - do I just need to buy a clay bar or are there other bits required? Will mildly soapy water do as a lubricant (for the clay) or should I use something else? All (sensible, relevant) advice appreciated :d
michael
I have the Poorboys clay bar and lubricant kit but there seems to be loads out there - some say soapy water is OK, there are lots of options it seems This might be of interest: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=

colsoop
Water will be fine Chris. Make sure that you give the car a good polish and wax afterwards.
Daston
I use the Meguires pack - all came together nice and easy. same here came with cloth, detailing spray (damn good for shows as well) and some sample wax
JustGav
I use a sonus clay bar and poorboy's quick detailer diluted 5:1... works an absolute treat.
Ric
bluetac does the same job, lol with water and a small amount of fairy liquid lol
JustGav
bluetac does the same job, lol with water and a small amount of fairy liquid lol Hmmmm, never thought of that, just wonder if it damages the paint at all... I'd be tempted to try that actually.
chilli
I use the Meguires pack - all came together nice and easy. same here too. Works well. It comes with detailing spray, but you could use soapy water, i.e. water with car shapoo as per washing the car. always keep the area well lubracted or it tends to stick and possibly mark the paint slightly. always turn the clay (or use fresh) to avoid rubbing grit etc on your paint easy job though and satisfying if it needs doing, makes the paint feel nice and smooth and it gets a good shine once polished/waxed

chilli
the clay is much stiffer than bluetac, I'm sure it must do a much better job...

Havard
bluetac does the same job, lol with water and a small amount of fairy liquid lol I thought Fairy Liquid had salt in it and was therefore not good for the paintwork???? H.
Jspec Germany
I'm a big fan of the Meguire's kit.
Havard
I got the Meguires kit yesterday with 3 bars... I had a go on a small bit of my bonnet but I don't feel it has made much of a difference to be honest. If I look in the light I can still see swirl marks. Granted it is a bit better than the bits I have not been done but it's nothing to write home about... I am going to do the whole car over the weekend and see how it fairs.... H. The clay bar isn't intended to remove swirl marks It's intended for the bonded on contaminants that an ordinary wash won't shift.
chilli
yeah exactly, you need a polish or cutting agent to get rid of swirls and a careful washing/waxing technique not to put them straight back in again
SupraJames
Meguairs do a tube of stuff called Swirl X, really good for removing swirls in paint, mine came up a treat. Never going to be perfect finish unless you power mop with differing grades of cutting compound and a lot of hard work. As for Fairy on cars, I was advised by a pro valeter never to use any sort of washing up liquid on paint as it contains lots of nasty chemicals which although are great for getting burnt on sheppards pie off your pots are really not nice to paintwork. Another tip that most of you prob know already is never polish or wax Carbon Fibre, bonnets, wings etc etc, makes them go very dull over time. michael
If anything using a clay bar will show the swirls more, you'll remove the wax that's been sat hiding them.

That wont work mate, you will add more. You want a PC without a doubt.
Ric
i think you missed the part about polishing pads, basically a PC without the randomness.
