JustGav
For all the space geeks who have been watching the shuttle launches.... 22:00 tonight, there is a program regarding the launch on National Geographic. (230 for those virgin viewers)..

JustGav
Yeah, it is one of the those events that I can recall exactly where I was, just like I can with columbia...
peter richards
really interesting programme , but just goes to show the pressure to launch overtook the risk factor , the srb makers were expecting it to blow on the pad ffs

Jezz
Fascinating program. Although quite bizzare how NASA had all those people telling them their billion dollar rocket was going to go up in smoke, yet they were happy to risk it.
JustGav
As much as I feel for the people on the shuttles when this happens, lets remember this is still a huge controlled fireball that these guys are strapping themselves to. It comes with some huge risks, always a shame but needs to be a lesson, which unfortuneatly since bean-counters are now in charge means this does not happen... When the shuttle program was first set up it was thrown money to succeed, this has not ever been duplicated. Space exploration doesn't win wars or make money for people so it will suffer. This sounds really cold and I don't mean it as bad as it sounds, but when I saw columbia go up I felt a deep sorrow, more for the space program than the astronauts, I knew it would effectively cripple the program finally. Don't get me wrong, I feel for the astronauts they have given their final everything for something they believed in, and if I was ever given the chance, would I take the risk, yes I believe I would. Completely agree. These guys know the risks, strapping yourself to 10000 litres of hydrogen, and 5000 litres of oxygen is always going to be dodgy! I'd love to see progress made in space. Sadly most of us will never see it. And on that note, i'm going to go outside and strap myself to a 10000 litre water butt, pump 1000000 psi of compressed air into it, and see how high I get. There are much easier and safer methods of getting high Jez
