Anyone ever changed their own valve stem seals?

How difficult is this to do? I have the step by step guide off mkiv.com and a friend to do the work (free of charge!).

The thing is my mate isn't a mechanic, well not as his current trade.

He could rebuild his Impreza blind-folded and worked a couple years as a mechanic on Fords and Jags. I was just unsure about how tricky this job is, he seems pretty confident he could do it.

Anyone done this and had problems? Is there anything else I should be looking to change whilst he's doing the work? Any advice appreciated. ;) :D

i'me not a fan of the stuffing rope compressed air trick, i think the definative method is to take the head off how else can you clean the carbon build up off the valves and check the seats, there is nothing difficult about the job if you are reasonably competant with a spanner, it is just time consuming

And expensive. The gaskets alone will chime in the best part of two ton.

Removing the sequential system on a 13 year old car isn't too much of a joy either, what with brittle plastics and rusted on bolts.

The point is, it's not to clean the valves or check the seats, agreed that's what you would take the head off for. But if you're just wanting the stems done then I wouldn't go through all the hassle of removing the head.

appreciate that tony i was just surprised at the built up of rock hard carbon right where the stem seals work this could potential chip or flake off leaving a knife edge to slice your brand new seal, i know where you are coming from with the 13 year old tubos mine came off to go single and i'me feckin glad i didn't have to put it all back on TBH i was not thinking about the stock turbos lol, another good reason to go single
