Since owning my E46 I've used

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AM-L 5w-30 Fully Syn BMW LL-04. On the back it says engines requiring API SN or ACEA C3

I'm searching around for some more and wondering is there really much difference to

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5w-30 Fully Syn. On the back its says engines requiring ACEA A5/B5

The one I'm using is £53.99 for 5L and the other I've listed is £31.99 for 5L

Just been researching the difference and found this using Google search

Can I use ACEA C3 instead of A5 B5 ?

ACEA C3 will be fine.. You wouldn't want to run A5/B5 in a car that had a catalytic convertor but the other way around is fine
