Window Issue - Where to focus?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I've got an odd problem with my passengers side window, and before I start pulling things apart I'm wondering what I should focus on as the cause.

Here's the problem as it progressed in the last few weeks.
1 - Initially the Passenger side window switch totally stopped working when trying to put it UP. (Down worked fine, and I just used the drivers side passenger switch as a work around)
2 - Not long after this, the drivers switch for the passenger window also intermittently stopped working UP. (Down also works fine, and drivers side window has no issue, it just failed intermittently to work UP for the passenger side).
3 - Now, after all that, the passenger side window switch has started working for UP again, but only intermittently, whilst the drivers side passenger switch doesn't push it up at all. ( drivers side window is fine)

Obviously I don't want to have to take off both door cards if its an issue somewhere else, or if it only in one of them. Any ideas? Window motor? a relay or something common to both switches? I don't think its the switches themselves based on the the way they have behaved, with DOWN not being an issue on either side, and the drivers window totally unaffected.

Have you guys checked the wheel well on the passenger side for moisture at all, it’s a long shot but if it’s damp there, either due to a leaky matrix or a grommet is missing, you might see an issue. I had a problem with the matrix on a previous car and it leaked into the well at that section and soiled the ECU.

Good idea - I've checked this already as I've had water problems in the past ... In my case it was rainwater the rear footwell though,(problem with the quarter glass)... my ecu never got wet so I can rule this out thankfully.

Have you looked at the mechanism itself as I had a similar issue a few years back and it turned out it was a frayed cable in the mechanism itself maybe worth a look.

Starting to look like it could be that, or perhaps the motor itself... On Facebook its been suggested that there may be a separate ECU/controller for the windows, but I've been through the full workshop repair manual and cant seem to see anything like that whatsoever.

Long shot maybe, check the cabling going from the door into the chassis, happens on Polo's! It's the flexing of the door opening and shutting.

Will do, plus Im going to check the mechanism inside. At this point I think its most likely a problem in the the mechanism or motor itself.
