Indeed, the arches were rolled way back when I got the wheels. It doesn't scrub at all now though.

Part 35 - Back at SRD finally...and more BIG changes

 

Lee and the chaps at SRD completed the engine some time ago however they're so busy I've had to wait a while to get the car to them.

It went down to them last week and...well things have taken a turn and a new direction again, more to follow.

 

Firstly the engine as it was when completed, looking nice and fresh and with some new GTE cam covers.

Whilst waiting for a slot at SRD, I stripped a few parts from the car in an effort to recuperate some much needed funds.

The car is looking pretty sorry for itself having spent a lot of time wasting away on the in-laws driveway.

Since arriving at SRD, the engine has now been pulled and somewhat stripped. 

There is some good news, for instance, the head looks fine and even the pistons appear to be re-useable.

As expected though. She span a bearing, specifically that on number 4. The rod and crank are scrap.

Now the big news....
 

Upon arriving at SRD, I had a lengthy discussion from Lee and team and we discussed a few things. 

We had already made decisions regarding injectors, turbo etc however upon closer inspection it was apparent that the new S369 would not allow a 4in downpipe as planned with the Walton manifold I purchased last time. In addition, my previously acquired Turbosmart wastegate was only a 50mm which, considering the latest spec, was deemed to small.

 

Now there was nothing wrong with the manifold but after some back and forth it was decided that I may as well sell the entire turbo kit, recuperate a decent lump sum and go all out with the billet collector SRD manifold and associated parts, it just future proofs the car that extra step and means there aren't any bottle necks that I'll end up wanting to address further down the line.

 

Following on from this idea of no compromises, I considered my gearbox... 😬

The R154 has been faultless for what I have needed previously and I quite liked it. That being said, if JamieP's car is anything to go by (it's practically the same spec) it'll make very good power and the R154 may be a ticking time bomb.

I decided I'd rather sell the R154 package now and fit something better instead of letting the R154 blow up and needing to find even more cash to then upgrade...man maths, right? 

 

I strongly considered the T56 but have settled on a V161 and will be looking to get that to Lee so it can all go in at the same time. 

 

(With that in mind, if anybody wants an R154 with everything from flywheel to prop, any of the engine, or the complete GE turbo kit then I will be listing imminently, by all means get in touch)

 

Hopefully there'll be more updates soon 🙂

That might be a step too far haha 😆  The new engine is already built anyway, it's the vvti engine above. 
The non-vvti engine that broke is the one in need of a crank but I'll be sending that as spares or repairs so to speak

 

The thread is probably a bit confusing now. It's gone through a few transformations 😬

I think after each transformation I've said "that's it now, no more".....

Then after each breakage, I've said "right, I'm throwing in the towel".....

Yet here we are with 'Part 35' and about it's 6th iteration haha 🤣

Part 36 - It's all coming together

Lee has sent me a few pics of the engine as it now stands, the new manifold is on and looks brilliant. 

You can see a few other nice bits; TRD engine mounts, Radium AN fittings, Titanium fittings on the manifold and the ridiculously sized screamer (now 60mm turbosmart).

I've then had some updates from Paul Cheshire who I chose to supply the gearbox. 

I've followed Paul for the past 12 months online and his attention to detail is impeccable, coupled with the fact that Lee also recommended him and he offers a 12month warranty on his box, I felt it was worth the premium over a used box that I'm buying blind. 

 

Paul sent me a video the other day, where he was excitedly showing off an old faded Toyota box. He was over the moon at the fact he'd found this gem, a BNIB countershaft that was clearly old stock sat in a warehouse somewhere for the past 20years. 

Luckily I shared his enthusiasm and we were soon both geeking out about it before he even opened the faded box. 
When you see the intricacy of the part that was hiding inside, it's even better still.

The gearbox build is now underway, there are some cool processes being undertaken including some CNC laser welding that looks fascinating.

The box should be ready to go in a couple of weeks at which point I can take it all down to SRD.

Part 37 - "She's alive"

 

This might be one of my favourite quotes of all time;

But first, a quick look at some recent bits. 

The engine was all built up with the FSM inlet, S369 sxe turbo and the lovely PHR pulley set anodised in black alongside a Fluidampr damper.

Then my refurbished V161 got dropped off. I'm sad I didn't get to see this in person because it looks like Paul's done a lovely job.

It's been built using quite a few 'old stock' but 'brand new' parts. The centre housing is a box fresh part and probably one of the few left in existence. 

Paul said he left it (ie didn't blast to match) as he thought it was cool...which I agree hole heartedly with.

I then bought some new front brakes from @Peter P on the forum here.

Very lightly used and includes uprated Porterfield pads. 

Lee kindly checked them under my wheels. They'll be fitted once Peter's new ones turn up and I'll have my refurbed LS400's up for sale.

So it's all together now and is running. It's only a first start and there's still work to be done but considering it's the first time she's ran in over a year, it's pretty exciting for me (hence I got the text today and came to share it immediately).

Love the new carbon fibre coil cover.

Hopefully there'll be some nice power figures to accompany the pretty looks soon.

Congrats mate, engine looks superb and I’m sure my K-Sport’s will be up to the task of reeling in all that extra horsepower! Lol. 😉

Oh it's definitely been tough at times and I've nearly thrown in the towel too often. I see you've had issues with yours already at the port. Don't throw in the towel either.

Not sure what you learnt from it other than to use it as a guide on what not to do haha.

Part 38 - Home time

 I managed to collect the car a couple of weeks ago from SRD 😃

Things went really well !!

SRD ran the car in without fault and then chucked her on the dyno for some tuning. There are a few videos which I will get to uploading soon but here's a picture for the time being 🔥🔥🔥

The full power run, as you can see below, made 736 hp at the wheels which I think is circa 850 hp at the fly 😃 😄 😆

I'm ecstatic with this! It's honestly as much as I can ever see me wanting and everything is perfectly safe now. 

 

The main reason she didn't make even more power was predominantly a restriction on the intake side of things as this was designed recently for the last engine / setup.

As mentioned, I'm more than happy power-wise, it may just be a consideration in the future from a reliability 

 

In addition, I now have a few settings on a cal switch which means I can turn the power down (and back up) as I please.

They also got the big brake kit fitted (on the front) that I purchased from @Peter P.

It's a K-Sport 8 pot 356mm kit with Porterfield R4S Street pads. They fit nicely under my wheels with no need for spacers or any of that malarkey. 

I do feel it's almost a shame they're so hidden as they look great but they work brilliantly. I'm really happy.

Then it was HOME TIME!!!! 🤪

Unfortunately my drive home consisted of me sat in a traffic jam, on the motorway, almost the entire time.

Whilst not the test I wanted for her, it did give me a great insight in to how extremely smooth etc she was.

I did manage to stretch her legs a little bit on the last bit of the journey which, by chance, ended up being a stretch of A road where a Ducati superbike had the same idea. 

Now the bike was definitely pulling on me but the car felt great and felt faster than the last set up. It was only when I got home that I realised I was I was still on the LOWEST setting I had and was a couple hundred hp down haha 🤣

 

Once home, I had the most daunting task. I had purchased a new house and now had concerns about getting the car in to the garage. 


Fortunately she did fit (it's tighter than it looks) but it required some serious gymnastics to get out  of the car once parked !!

 

It's not fun but I am seriously relieved that it even goes in. 
I thought for a minute I was going to have to accelerate our move to a bigger house (read bigger garage) already haha

So that's her home. I'll pop another update in the next few days covering what's happened since but it's fair to say I'm very happy and I'm looking forward to being able to use her for once.

Really grateful to @Lee P, @Mike2JZ, Ash and the other chaps at SRD for everything they've done.

Haha that was indeed me and yeah, the Ducati was up the bypass towards Aylesbury.

Part 39 - Broke her already...

 

Following the collection of the car above, I managed an impromptu trip to Caffeine and Machine.

The car got a lot of attention (seemingly all positive) and was even more popular than the significantly more expensive GT3 that it was parked next to.

I actually ended up getting tagged in quite a few photos and even a cool video that a guy edited together and sent to me.

Following that trip it went in the garage for a few days.

I then took it out again for a short drive to a local shopping place where I parked it up. I came out an hour later to find a couple of kids photographing it. They asked if they could video me starting up and driving off.


I had no issue with them doing so but the car seemed to get stage fright and wouldn't start.

Mike was thankfully on call and a bit of troubleshooting confirmed that, whilst it was a fuel issue, it was not the ECU etc and was likely to be the pump.

Cue me stripping the pump out of the tank in the car park (a repeat of something I did a couple of years ago in Germany).

I found that the wires in to the top of the hanger and in to the pump had got really hot and had melted.

I'm not entirely sure why it happened, potentially the higher draw of the new 500lph pump or the fact it runs at circa 14v with the direct feed from the battery, or a combination of the two.


I intend to re-do the wiring for the meantime and will look to replace the hanger with a PHR one at some point.

Almost 8 years of ownership

 

It looks like I've got the car running well now with massive thanks to Mike at SRD however I'm still testing everything out so will report back soon.

 

In the meantime, I was thinking about how far the car has come during my ownership. I'll have had her 8 years this year !

The starting point -  A 60k 2jz-GE with stock W58 gearbox and an open A01a differential. (circa 220 hp)

My first foray in to the NA-T world - A basic XS Power kit with a T61 turbo on an almost stock GE engine. Still on the W58 gearbox but now with an A01b LSD. (circa 400 hp)

There were a few small changes over the years but I ended up with a (badly) forged GE with new inlet, BW S366 turbo, A02b lsd and an R154 gearbox. (circa 600 hp)

Now we're here, an SRD forged vvti engine, a BW s369, a new V161 gearbox and an A02 with TRD diff with a LOT of supporting mods. (circa 800 hp)

 

There's a lot more to it than these 4 photos  but I feel like I've achieved a lot (especially when I thought about selling up so many times).

These projects are never quick and to be honest, they're never finished...BUT... I never thought I'd get this far (and wouldn't have over the years without friends, my fiance, SRD tuning, this forum and a shit load of overtime at work haha).

 

I'm really pleased with where it's at and hope with some cosmetics etc it'll really make me proud !

In the meantime, I can still drive and enjoy her 😍

Part 40 - Broke her...in a different way...

 

I thought I'd keep updating this thread.
As per the title, she's broken again but not in keeping with the rest of this thread...

As anyone who's followed will know, getting the car running properly has, at times most of the time, seemed unachievable...UNTIL it went to SRD that is.
I'm not one to 'fanboy' and blow smoke up anyone's proverbial but honestly I couldn't be happier so far. The car has been running flawlessly since Mike's wiring fix.

As a result I've made a list of bits I want to tidy up / upgrade and planned to slowly chip away at them with no particular rush;

This broken light in the boot has always bothered me, it was just never high on the list of priorities.

I'd upgraded the sidelights to facelift ones some 7 years ago but never retrofitted the 3rd bolt meaning a 'sag' that bugged me so much, but again, getting the car running had previously been the priority.

Looks much better, I even fitted orange bulbs back in which give a slight glow and looks much better in my opinion.

It's not just me that's been enjoying the car either, despite it being pretty damn loud; this little guy seems to find it quite comforting and it's one of the few places he actually bloody calms down

I've been so pleased with the car that I treated it to a new pressure washer, snow foam cannon etc and gave it some long awaited loving. I've been keeping it nice and clean but using it regularly too.

Then every night it gets tucked up safe and sound in the garage....or so I thought.

 

- See this is where it all went wrong. Tucked away safely, when, one random weekday my other half gets awoken by an ALMIGHTY crashing sound. She feared someone was breaking in to the garage and checked outside to find all was quiet and peaceful.

- Fast forward to the weekend where it was a good friends wedding and I decided to take the Supra as the weather was glorious. I opened the garage to discover;

So this rather heavy and rather full cupboard decided to take a break from hanging on the wall. It had been up 12 months and just decided enough was enough. Unfortunately the Supra didn't sufficiently break it's fall and the poor cupboard ended up broken...

It did a significant amount of damage to the wing and bonnet of the Supra too, photo's don't do it justice as there are multiple creases in the bonnet.

As you can just about see here, the crease at the top is the worst but there are a number of creases and dents lower down.

 

So I'll leave it there for now. I'm already making headway with sorting this disaster out and will hopefully be able to report back in the next couple of weeks but I really do think my ownership of this car is cursed sometimes. 
Onwards and upwards eh...I've come too far to do anything else.

Thanks man ! It's been a long road but the engine bay is definitely the best bet. One day I want to spray the bay etc to really set it off. Thanks for reading !

Love the stock wing so that's a no and as for the carbon bonnet it's a no from me too. I have a carbon boot and ideally want to swap back to a stock one. 
It's cool and with the weave showing through i's a great talking point but it creaks a little and what not.
