Range Rover restoration

Have you considered a full shell strip and having it dipped? Or should that be dunked? :) I have seen some very impressive results by chemical stripping and then immersion phosphating, and it is cost effective.

Yes Chris i had thought about it but then your into doing a 100% restoration and the costs

start going a little silly, with the rot we've found i'm quite happy it doesn't need this.

There is a brand new chassis and shell in the workshop for Phils next project once mines out

the way.

Boot floor is now out and i'm pleased to say the chassis is in great condition, only very light

surface corrosion, just needs a good clean and a fresh coat of paint.

The only place on the chassis that needs more attention is next to the nearside down pipe where the cat

sits next to the chassis, the corrosion there is a lot heavier but once the exhaust is off it should

be pretty easy to cut out the rot and weld in a new piece.

The finished 2 door with a 4.6 in it, a 4.2 LSE Overfinch and a new body waiting to be built that's going

on the new chassis

I've been locating some of the interior trim parts i need, on the door casings

there are whats called finger pulls as you can see in the photo.

All mine are cracked or got a part of the edge missing, i trawled ebay for a while

and found a guy selling 3 of them in perfect condition for £30 and nearly hit the

buy button.

Another place wanted £20 each for them !!

I gave LR a call for a giggle and would you believe it they can still supply them, i

have 4 new ones coming on Wednesday, £4 each + vat

Another item crossed off my list :)

Rear cross member is out along with the rear axle, petrol tank etc

Really happy with the condition of everything so far and only surface corrosion on

chassis which i'm really pleased to see.

The diff oil was drained and just nice clean oil came out, no signs of anything nasty, it'll

get cleaned up, painted then refilled with fresh oil along with new discs, calipers, airbags

and brake lines.

Once the rear cross member is in the back end of the chassis will be cleaned up and

painted and the axle can go back in

The balance weight has come off the rear propshaft so i'm just searching for somewhere

local to do that

Rear axle has been stripped cleaned and painted, just awaiting new parts to get rebuilt.

Front axle is also off the car, it's been jetwashed and now being stripped, new swivel

housings are on order as the old ones are scrap, got some Teflon coated ones coming.

It should be rust free and painted ready to be re built by the end of the day.

Again nice clean diff oil has come out of it and the half shaft splines look in

very good condition

Thanks guys, got a lot of parts to media blast now to remove surface rust, then some bits will

be powder coated and others painted with chassis paint, the same stuff going on the axles.

Not sorted the paint for the exhaust yet and also have the rocker covers and plenum to do

but they can be done later.

Spoke to soon regarding the front diff as it needs a re build and one cv joint is scrap

but i'll replace both of them.

Looks like it had a problem and someone just did an oil change hoping it would fix it.

The drive shafts are fine though so that's good news

Had a good result down at the shot blasters though and their doing a large pile of stuff

for a very sensible amount of cash :)

The rear axle case will get done as well as the pile in the photo along with the Y piece

and manifolds

Collected the first batch of parts from the shot blasters this morning and dropped off the

rear axle case along with the manifolds and exhaust Y piece .

Had 2 studs in the drivers side cylinder head break but when the inner wing is removed

there should be enough room to carefully drill them out, fingers crossed :)

Have also spoke to a good mate of mine about re skinning the lower tailgate, i shall be

dropping that off at his workshop tomorrow for him to have a look.

I'm contemplating replacing the steel skin with aluminium

A few parts i collected yesterday from the shot blasters which will be painted

this afternoon.

Clean and paint the front axle then rebuild with new diff, cv's and swivel

housings.

The rusty Y piece is at the blasters so we'll see what state that is in

tomorrow
