Just thinking out loud for now: I have a satellite dish and cabling etc all set up, the only thing I don't have is a subscription to Sky for anything (and that's the way I want to keep it).

Would any of these boxes allow me to watch a subset of Sky channels without paying a subscription? I know that any free offering wouldn't include "premium" channels such as Sky1 or any movie channels: I'm happy with that. :)

With just a box you will still get over 250 free channels but as Scott has said below you will miss some unless you get that card.

Yes but you need to buy a free to air card off sky for some channels like 5 etc its about 20 pounds one off fee for the viewing card link here matey

 Cheers mate

does a sky plus box just plug in and replace my old pace box

Only if you're running two feeds from the dish to the box. If you only have a standard box you'll more then likely only have a single feed. In which case you'll need another cable run & the LNB changed (part at the end of the dish arm) over to a quad rather then the single you may already have :)
