Ludicrous GTR repair costs

Continued on from the discussion we had about bumpers and rear view mirrors and so forth being expensive, check this out:

Now. Some caveats. Those prices are what the BODYSHOP charged the insurance company for, not necessarily what Nissan charged the bodyshop. And as we all know, car bodyshops are one of the dodgiest least trustable entities known to man ;) But still. What a ridiculous situation. After the tissue paper warranty debacle, we now find out they might become uninsurable due to ripoff repair costs...

For the attention span deficients - someone tapped a van's towball with their GTR's front bumper, caused a small dent and a scuff, and the repair bill from the bodyshop was £11,000 because it set off the passenger collision system in the bonnet. Owch.

Body shops are closing left, right and centre. Due to mad `elf and safety constraints, and constantly moving goalposts they are enormously expensive to set up and run efficiently and legally. I hear this argument against them all the time, indeed I need 3 race cars painting over the next 3 months, and am facing hefty bills. If they are so much of a money maker you could always set your own up ;) Again, blame `elf and safety and the blame culture for grossly overweight cars with a plethora of high tech, high replacement cost safety features. First Golf GTi vesus current VW performance models weight chart anyone? Difference in repair costs?

I think you're ranting in vain unfortunately Chris, gone are the days of the KISS principle. I think the last hot hatch that I saw that had just most of the basics was the new RB26 Renault - then again even that has things like airbags and traction control etc. Not that that's cheap even compared to a Golf GTi MK1 even with inflation taken into account.

A friend's got both a MK1 and a MK2 GTi alongside a '78 RS2000 Escort which make me think my Supra is far far far too complicated.

Yeah, but which would you rather be in when the BMW hits you through a red traffic light :sly:

I'm fine with airbags and stability control and aircon and all that jazz, but something that writes off the car with a minor tap is rather ridiculous.

Sorry for the long post in advance.

Just a heads up for all reading but it sounds like he might have been the innocent party in a scam that is currently doing the rounds. In the guys 1st post in the link he mentions it was a low speed crash into the back of a white van and the cause being the person infront of the van stopped for no reason.

A similar situation happened to a friend of mine recently. One of his company vans was on delivery in a built up area doing no more than 20mph. All of a sudden and for no reason the car infront slammed on his brakes causing the van to run into the back of him.

3 guys aged between 18-30 were inside the car. All 3 claimed to have whiplash and all 3 claimed loss of earnings due to whiplash, stress, trauma & nightmares caused by the accident.

They went to one of these no win no fee companies who contacted his insurance company with a claim for 20k for each person!!!

With a little investigation they found out that these guys have been involved in a few accidents already this year and had links to the no win no fee company.

They contacted the insurance with this info but were told that the claim was less than it would cost them to defend the case so they were going to payout. Not too bad for a days work!

This all happened near Hitchin in Hertfordshire.

Hmm this reminded me of the story not long ago of a bloke which basically does the same thing but he charges people for it.

All these insurance scams is just making life harder for honest people. Premiums are shooting up like crazy!
