Checking oildipstick when engine is cold or hot

Hello Forum.

The reason for asking is because when I check the dipstick when the engine is hot, the dipstick only shows half full but when checking when the engine is cold, it shows full.

I always used to check when the engine is hot but looks like it is not the way forward with my current Supra.

Anyone who has ecperienced the same?

Cold obviously the oil will have drained down and will show high on dipstick

Hot depends how soon after you turn off

If hot and just turned off it will show lower on the stick until oil eventually drains down after 5 minutes or so

There are 2 oil warning lights

Yellow for low level

Red for low oil pressure

My warning lights doesn’t work unfortunately.

When I check the dipstick while the engine is hot I normally do it approx. 10 minutes after the engine is off.
