The £20K auto

Quite a bit of price hike/insurance value talk, so there is a (very?) clean stock car semi timewarp'ish/low usage, with a good importer route (Vine Place) and seemingly per ebay a good last owner (linked to Toyota dealer).

 

The sort of car that rarely comes up, so it will interesting to see if the bog standard (no front spoiler poss/prob no lsd) makes the over £20K being asked.

 

Just popping this up as despite a few manuals going at high prices I'm not sure I actually know of a auto going for £20K+ and our own member has a UK car around the same figure that's been up for a while now (hence I don't feel bad mentioning this new car as I really can't see it's going to have a queue forming as such (not really flippable/a bargain). I think we've reached a price point where instant purchasing is gone and whilst the price is high you can now at least peruse what is available at (some sort of) of leisure?

 

No doubt (no idea really lol) this is way cheaper than a direct import at the moment, but it's interesting to me where the demand would come from....(wonder how long this lasts)

That's what I mean, tatty £8-9k na auto's up to these lovely clean tt's it seems a bit 'peaky' to attract buyers right now, I suppose the market is the market, just that as the prices rise there are a few interesting alternatives 'on the way down' so interesting choices for us and potential Supra buyers.

you can get some decent cars for supra money , but the supra / mine does anyway and I haven't changed anything looks wise for years is drawing more attention getting nods thumbs up smiles and people even stopping me to talk about it. I think the youtube generation see the supra and 2jz videos out their its more of a icon from that then fast and furious! so yes price is high but worth it for weekend toy car back when they was 5k for a tt auto they were a daily driver for a lot of members now im not sure how many still daily a supra , I take mine to work on weekends just to stop the battery from going flat but im proud to say I have covered 100k miles in my supra since I got it over 11 years ago :D

I see loads of supras for sale on here recently , they don't seem to be selling like they did probably because of the price hike

 

A few years ago the supra was probably one of your best Value for money cars when it came to horsepower. A few grand for ~400hp was great. Now it isn’t, and the only people buying them are the ones who really like supras.

Purchase with the heart more and more as prices rise. Looked at loads of higher performing cars (stock anyway) before joining the club and none raised the same smile. The attention as mentioned above is way more than I expected too.

 

The only Supra I imagined owning was a manual over the years though. Maybe it was the f+f movies cutting to the downshift from an unusually high gear in the middle of every race that I can’t shake :)

 

I was lucky to be able to stretch to +10k essentially just for a gearbox but it had to be a manual.

Fair play, I did pay around £13k I think for my old RSP SZR in 2001/2 but it was only 4 years old at the time, none of the other 9 were in 5 figures, so it's a mixture of tightness! and what I've been used to!

 

It's crazy that very few saw this coming only a few years back, you think you and a small minority of other strange people! just love the car and it'll slip into small money, like the mkiii had (that really was the widely held view on here).

 

All I can say is I'm glad badge snobbery was/is a thing and that they weren't liked so much in years 3-9 as that made ownership and many many years of happy reliable motoring possible for me......think I'm gonna cry lol!

The Supra Mk4 still has a lot of appreciation to run for a few more years to come. The eBay Auto at £22k is pushing the market but we have seen TT6's sell for over £30k pushing along at the top of the market. The one on eBay comes with an assured clean bill of health, it tends to be the ones with a detailed and extensive bad bits list that struggle to peak the market. Not many apparently want to pay £20k or £30k for a really old car with a list of bad bits. Me included, I'd expect everything sorted for top of the market price. There is sometimes expectation that runs away from reality with sellers, but that happens with any car offered for sale.

 

We see lots of lazy sellers of Supras with things like the aircon not working followed on by a comment of probably just needs a re-gas. Well re-gas it for £30 to show it doesn't need a £1k overhaul. With old cars and a premium price attention to detail is just about everything. I'd definitely bin the wheels on that £22k car.

I’ve been looking for a supra for the past few months - and I remember looking last year before I got my most recent car.

 

The clean na manuals were going for an asking price of 7-8k now they can be 11-12k and that’s just in a year!

 

I think I’ve managed to bag one off Kendo11 - for a really good price - my worry was that I wouldn’t have the chance to own one before the prices rocket even more.

 

Spoke to a few importing companies they’re asking for about 13-15k budget.

 

Are the prices going to continue to rise? What do you think the mk5 is going to do to the mk3+4 market?

I personally aren’t a fan of the mk5, however, it may further increase the value of the 4 because it’s being brough back into lime light? Maybe like the r35 and r34 I don’t know!

I think the big/rapid hike is done tbh, but we are (still a little) behind the Japanese auction and other countries markets for prices. I suspect those markets are thinking it'll rise so if anything that gives our more chance of rising higher/faster. So in essence I'm contradicting myself as I haven't a clue!! but it certainly doesn't seem like they will now ever plummet and so your money is safe (provided you don't have to get insurance involved for some reason, then it could be slightly less safe)

 

It's all really sentiment based as far as I can see? (but then I spose a lot of the semi classic car market is?) the cars aren't that much rarer than 5-6 years ago, obviously were as good a car then as now (better if you take the wear and tear into account) there is just a belief now more than before that, as well as being a good/iconic car, they are also a safe haven, sound investment? So sort of can't lose, maintenance cost only ownership scenario?

I think the import price from Japan has a large bearing on the market price.

 

At the end of the day if it costs you £x to import one then a already imported one is going to be £2-3k less. Also it comes down to supply and demand, the numbers were arguable reduced when you could but a TT auto for Single figure thousands and make most your money back by selling the engine. I will be selling mine come the autumn to fund a house deposit, my plan for this year is to do exactly what rider has said which is fix as many mechanical niggles as possible and if possible give it the best spec for the next buyer.

If I hadn't bought mine a few years ago and was looking at a car at this point in time I have to say it probably wouldn't be a NA Supra for that kind of price, much as I love them there are many many tempting options for 12k or less.

I think sentiment plays a big part along with supply and demand.

 

Look how much MK1 Escorts go for nowadays. I wrote off a couple in my early driving years.

 

In my opinion I don't think some of our cars are worth the money that the market demands but market pressures talk.

 

I paid £11k for my TT VVTI RSP 9 years ago and have probably spent on average a grand a year on it to maintain it as it looks now which is fairly stock BPU.

 

I waivered last year at selling it but now I can see me selling it all.

As I’ve had a run in with my insurance, na supra is the only car that I fancy right now that I can insure reasonably for some reason

I know of a TT Auto that sold for £20k the end of last year, it’s expensive for what it is but there was a lot of factors to include like mileage, condition, spec, colour :shrug:

 

Can I ask what that one had that was attractive? was it stock low miles, or mint modded etc....perhaps facelift/late one

It was low mileage, 1 uk owner, rare colour, nearly bpu and slight body changes.

 

Was it your new purchase by any chance? :)

 

It was indeed :) I know I overpaid for what it is but if you’ve been on here long enough then you’ll know how much I’ve been after another DJG and how rare they are to come up, so had to bite the bullet
