Piston usually goes through the block so complete new engine unfortunately. Yeh i do the occasional oil sample, but supposedly even that is not a accurate way of telling. If you warm the car up before you give it the beans you should be okay. Biggest issue is knowing it's previous life before you own it. Scooter Posted February 27, 2019 Share Posted February 27, 2019 Think it needs a bit more than a set wheels i felt old just looking at it but guess its more reliable than anything else out there, looks like they stopped in 2010 I forget that 2010 is old really! yeah they aren't sexy or particularly dynamic that's for sure, I can't 100% explain why I like them so, perhaps because others don't so much, they are definitely niche, well engineered and affordable. Dnk Posted February 28, 2019 Author Share Posted February 28, 2019 I found a white and red one but its got strange history and has been exported out the country and back in again, the dealer (not BMW) says a doctor took it to South Africa for a period of time then brought it back, one service was done by BMW in SA supposedly. Thorin Posted February 28, 2019 Share Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) M3 E93 - Looks like good value but rod bearing failures and throttle actuators failing put me off Don't let talk of rod bearing failures put you off, it seems incredibly rare, and was mainly an issue in the US it seems from the stories. Also 2009 onwards I believe used a revised bearing. I was speaking to a guy who'd owned a few E9x's and he said he'd probably look at inspecting and replacing them if needed at 70,000 miles. Throttle actuators, yeah I've had that. £1100 at main dealer prices to replace one last year (warranty paid for it). Replacements should last the life of the car though. E9x prices seem like they might be trending up, I'm hoping I might even make money on it if I keep it a few years. Dnk Posted March 1, 2019 Author Share Posted March 1, 2019 (edited) NCB warned me away from DCT boxes unless i'm buying with main dealer warranty or other warranty that would cover replacing the box, apparently from what i'm reading if it breaks its a new box ? a lot of warranties probably wouldn't get close to covering the cost.
