The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio ticks a lot of boxes for me, i'd certainly consider one for my next car

Oh yeah, forgot about that. Drove the Selvio last night and that's great too, but I'd want RWD. Giulia also among the best looking cars around. It will break, though.

That comes with the territory to some degree though. Its an expensive car when new!

A friend of mine with a 997T said the ceramic front disks are £6k plus per pair and there's no other option for them except porsche! With that said, they last much longer than crappy metal ones.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have just sadly crossed the SL off the list for good

Spoke to a local Merc specialist who added to list of parts i kind of new about and basically said

great car but a bottomless pit in repairs, i shan't go through the list but way too much for me to

live with

PS: thanks CW for telling me in the first place to not go there :)

Much left on the short list!? seems like you are having trouble finding a semi modern GT (I know you want convertible) that doesn't worry you too much pre purchase, is if fair to say it's slim pickings or do you think you are being picky/over cautious?

I can't argue i'm being picky, know you only get the down side on the internet but the guy

at Mercedes specialist went through a list of common failures all costing a pretty penny, he reeled

off a list that just went on and on, as much as i love the look that's not my kind of car.

Roof seals he said were unfixable due to a dire design fault, if you live in a rain free country

or it never goes out in the rain fine, not much use here.

I've been spoilt with my cars of recent years and none have cost very much

to keep on the road

The E46 i've had for 6 years, has had a few bits but nothing to break

the bank, the most expensive was the drivers door mirror which

i could of fixed much cheaper but i bought a brand new one from BMW.

Only parts replaced other than service items

calipers refurbished on the front

replace battery

cam cover seal

front lower arm bushes

drivers mirror

drivers door lock mechanism

oil filter housing seal

oil level sensor

I doubt even with labour its cost me £1500 in the 6 years i've had it

The list of convertibles that got my vote on looks then start reading up on them before i part with

£20k +

AM V8 Roadster - a bit out of my price range but love the look

M3 E93 - Looks like good value but rod bearing failures and throttle actuators failing put me off

Z4 35iS DCT - looking like this could be the route i'll go if i carry on

SL350 - SL500 - SL63 - just too many issues on all of them for me

F Type - not investigated them much but a few people in the car world say poor build quality

Seems very hit or miss with the M3 V8, i don't doubt plenty are fine but the amount i see

having rod bearings replaced with major wear on the shells isn't right in my book, lots of discussion

on the subject, is it wrong oil being used, wrong clearance tolerances, abuse by owners especially before warmed up etc

A few specialists recommend having oil samples done which will show up premature

wear of the rod bearings

I think one owner in the USA got a new engine out BMW but think thats pretty rare if not the only one

The best move would be keep my E46, it washes up very well, not rot on it and still

looks pretty good and goes well enough with the 3.0 straight 6 in it.

Does everything i need it to do but i just fancy a change

It just passed the MOT, had a tiny bit of surface rust on the rear

brake lines, that was quickly dealt with and all cleaned up and sprayed

with a zinc coating

I have a soft (odd) spot for the SC430.......just needs an exhaust (and a few psi) to be special!!

Think it needs a bit more than a set wheels :innocent: i felt old just looking at it but guess its more reliable than

anything else out there, looks like they stopped in 2010

Unfortunately it's just one of those things which has been blown out of proportion. Like anything, if you look after it, it will be fine.

Actuators can go but they are a £600 with lifetime warranty.

The rod bearings are a £1400 preventative measure but its 50/50 as to whether it is actually worth doing or not. There has not been enough longevity to prove whether changing them is actually a good idea.

The sound they make though is incredible - then again, i may be biased
