no boost from 2nd turbo

Hi all.

 

I have had my 1993 j spec tt aerotop for 12 years now and it has never missed a beat. That is until now :-( Just recently, it has started intermittently losing all boost from the 2nd turbo. The 1st turbo seems to work fine boosting at around .5 -.6 bar. As soon as it gets near to 4000rpm (where the turbo would usually boost at around 1.2 bar) the boost reduces to 0.1 and the car accelerates like a 1.1 fiesta.

 

I'm not very mechanically minded so taking the battery off and reconnecting it was the first thing I tried. Strangely this seemed to work the first time I tried it but didn't take too long for the problem to return.

 

I am not hearing any strange noises from the engine / turbos and would be surprised if it was a loose hose as it occasionally works fine for several full throttle accelerations in a row.

 

The car has a Blitz nur spec exhaust with 1 cat removed, Greedy profec E01 boost controller, fuel cut defender and a cone filter. (These are the only mods I know about).

 

I run the car on 99 ron fuel.

 

I would be really grateful if anyone has any suggestions.

Yep it's you're exhaust gas controll valve sticking! Had the same problem with mine, took it off and soaked it in WD40 and problem solved

 

As I said, I really am not very technically minded. Where can I find the EGCV? and are we talking about the EGCV VSV or the EGCV actuator?

The IACV could also be the issue.

You can put it into TTC mode to see if No.2 tubbie kicks in (quite a nice sensation) which will cut out the split pipe scenario.

 

As the cars are getting on a bit it can be wise to replace both the IACV (90910-12126 on the part or 25860-46060 on the packing

) and EGCV (90910-12127) [pics attached of both] just to be safe.

Had this with mine and after swapping VSVs and hoses, testing the pressure tank, I kept thinking I had cured it....only to find the next time I used it and really needed No2 I hadn't fixed it at all.

But I did manage to sort it in the end with the excellent advice as always from CW, and after using the car for the first time in a couple of months all last weekend, I am absolutely sure this time it is sorted. There are 2 hard pipes that rung along the back and at the end of each hard pipe there is a short piece of rubber coupling hose, so 4 in total. These are an absolute bitch to get to and you need lots of patience and small hands, but it is doable. In my case I used long lengths of re-enforced quality hose and effectively replaced the hard pipes. So instead of having 8 possible joins to fail or leak I only have 4 and it was 4 less connections to make in the very hard to get to area you have to work in. Since doing this my sequential system is the best its been since I got the car back on the road 6-7 years ago, very pleased and although it was a real PITA to do glad I pursued it. I started to look at going single at one point due to the frustration of the random fault re-occurrence .

Yes those hard and soft pipes to the pressure tank under the inlet manifold can be troublesome. many people don't even realise they are there at all as they are well hidden! Glad it sorted your long standing issues!

Thanks for the advice. Went to the local toyota dealer today and asked a price for the EGCV. They didnt have a clue what i was talking about and couldnt find the part listed, so this will help alot. Can I ask what TTC mode is and how you get into it? sorry lol

Those VSVs are not going to be cheap from MrT, until you have pin pointed what the issue is you might be better off (financially at least) seeing if you have a local member willing to swap VSVs just to determine if it is in fact a vsvs playing up.

 

They're not too bad to be fair. Two were purchased from http://www.Amayama.com (as per the pics) and came from Japan. Bear in mind though that there'll be handling fees and duty this end (allow £25 per item as that what it was this end for those two).

Ah, for some reason I imagined they would be considerably more than that, I am sure I had a quick look when I suspected mine and the ones I found were way dearer. In that case the OP may be as well to replace them at that price for peace of mind and to get them out of the equation.

Took a look at the converting to TTC instructions. Looks quite easy even for a ham fisted novice like me. I will probably replace the EGCV vsv to start with. Car does not get used a whole lot these days so the wait to get the part from Japan wont matter too much.

 

Cant thank you all enough for you help with this. I really appreciate it.

 

Will post when I get it working to let you know what it was.

Well, got my new egcv vsv today from Japan. Fitted it and changed the pipe work back to sequential. Took it out for a spin and the original problem is still there :-(

Works perfectly in TTC mode so I guess that means there is no problem with the boost pipes.

Any further suggestions?
