Cleaning my Oil Control Valve (OCV) on a VVTI Supra

Just a quick write up on how I cleaned my Oil Control Valve (OCV) and filter on my VVTI Supra. The valve itself controls the oil pressure sent to the VVTi intake cam. I changed this more as a prevention than a cure.

 

I decided to replace the following two parts with new Toyota parts instead of cleaning them, as they are very cheap:

 

 

  • Oil Control Valve Filter
  • Washers for the union bolt
  • OCV o-ring

In the end I didn’t use the new o-ring as the OCV was in very good condition as was the o-ring

 

Tools Required:

 

  • 10mm socket
  • 22mm spanner
  • 5mm Alan key
  • Cloth/cleaning rag

 

First, the two plugs need to be unplugged/removed so you can access the union bolt as pictured:

Then, using the 22mm spanner under the nut to remove the union bolt and washers, careful not to drop the washers!

The bolt should come out with the OCV filter attached as pictured:

The filter easily pops off, here is the old and new filter:

If you are not replacing the part then clean it all up with a degreaser, be very careful with the mesh if doing this!

Then pop it all back in reverse of the process to take it out so you end up with it looking like this:

Next up is cleaning the actual OCV, to do this remove the cam cover bolts and then the cam cover, this reveals the OCV (circled), remove the nut holding it in place (as per pic) and slide the OCV out:

Give the OCV a good clean with a degreaser/cam cleaner, if the o-ring needs replacing nows the time to do it but it shouldn’t really be necessary. Then put it all back together in reverse of the above process:

Put the cam cover back in place and its all done.

 

According to a US forum this can be done if you have idle issues on your VVTI, or if there are error codes such as code 59 for supra and P1329 for IS300/Aristo which may be cleared by cleaning the OCV if there are issues with the VVTi system. I did mine our of interest/prevention/boredom etc J

 

Anyway I hope someone finds this useful :)

yeh its pretty easy to do, a bit fidilly and you just need to be very careful not to drop the washers when removing the union bolt for the filter, part numbers below as well as the one for the actual OCV :)

 

15330-46010 – Oil Control Valve - Not needed unless there is a problem with it

90099-14137 – Rubber o_ring for Oil Control Valv

15678-46020 – Oil Control Valve Filter

90430-16012 – Washer/Gaskets for union bolt - x2 required

The end of that OCV looks poorly?

 

Is that secondary belt line on the cam pulley an old wound, or is the belt tensioner on it's way out?

 

Hi David, the end of the OCV cleaned up, it was just some oil on the end, belt and tensioner should be fine just had them changed by SRD:

I can see it's a new belt, was the tensioner arm and bearing renewed too?

 

In your latest pic the belt is running a different line on the pulleys, maybe that pic was taken before the engine was turned?

 

Are you sure about that OCV end, in the pic it looks as if the casting is failing?

yep all renewed, latest pic in the thread taken before the engine was run, yes the OCV cleaned up like new, i had the part number ready to order a new OCV but it wasnt necessary so I didnt :)

Hi mate, sorry just got back off holls yesterday, ill go whip the cover off now and get a couple of pics wont take long :)

 

Just took the cover off and removed the OCV to get a couple of pics, bear in mind the engine has been run since I did the thread, anway here are the pics as requested :)

This mentions the reset, but I can't see the exact procedure....opps yes it does see below.

Try reset the ETCS-i system – Turn the key to the “ON” position but don’t turn over the car, put your foot completely down on the throttle “Gas” pedal for 30 seconds, you should hear a beeping/humming sound while the ETCS-i system resets, turn the ignition to “Off”. Now turn the car back over and re-test to see if you have any symptoms

Mine has started to hunt idle so trying to figure out what part it could be that needs replacing. 

Yes mate it worked fine again once I replaced the ocv as per the guide. 
The part number was slightly different as mentioned in my comment. I was told by Toyota that it was a newer version but works the same as the previous. 
Had no issues since it was changed out.
