Hi everyone !

I am a new supra owner, i am French and live in Japan.

I received my Supra last Thursday, had the opportunity to test it this week end, and it felt very great!

Sadly, i don't know too much about mechanics, and my knowledge in this domain are very poor.

So i hope that you guys give me good tips.

I bought a 97 Supra RZ 6 gears manual which has already a little bit more than 100 000 km.

The exterior and interior are very clean for a 97 car, and we can see than the previous owner really take care of the car.

Also, i don't know exactly if my car is Single Turbo or Twin Turbo.

I know that the engine is stock, there is an air cleaner from HKS, a Boost Controller from hks "AVC Boost Controller" and an Intercooler.

From the guy in the shop, the car deliver something like 350-400 HP but i have to test in on a dyno to verify that.

I will take some photos of the Engine, and interior, so you guys can explain me a little bit more what settings i have.

Also, as it is the first sport car that i drive, i am not really use to rev the engine very high. (Even if i love the sound hehe)

What is exactly the recommended shifting position for a car like that ?

When do you guys shift in general when you are in an everyday street use ?

Sorry about my bad English, and sorry about the simple questions.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks all for your welcome and answers!

So, that mean that my supra still have the stock Twin Turbo in it right ?

But i heard that the stock twin turbo and the bov sound is almost silent in the supra ? But in my car, i can hear it very clearly, so i though something new was installed.

The turbo is heard more.with an aftermarket intake mate.

Oh, i see, so the red thing on the left is the air intake ? This is what make me hear the turbo more right ?

I read that the air intake bring fresh air in the combustion engine.

Doesn't the intercooler do the same job ?

Anyway, now i understand why my Supra is close to stock perfs. Its good like that!

So i can tune it later if i want too.

Thanks for the informations guys.

The intercooler cools the air that goes into the engine, if you fit a stock airbox on the car it will be much

quieter and much better than the HKS induction kit you have.

Are you sure about that ?

Then why this HKS induction kit exist ? To make more noise ?

Sorry i don't know what mean decatted ?

For the boost, i don't know exactly, i have to confirm that, but the seller told me that the peak of the boost was 1.2

And sometimes, when the boost go over 1.2 (after a hard acceleration) the boost peak make a "biiip" noise. I guess its to prevent the engine to overheat ?

I really need to know more about my car and "car mechanic" in general.

If you guys can wait until next Saturday, i can take more pictures of the engine, and what i have inside the car, the boost level etc...

Its my first sport car and cars like supras are modified a lot, so i guess its safer to know what's going on !

Decatted means that you have removed the cats and replaced them by a straight pipe. (enlèvement des catalyseurs).

This way, you will gain power as you will have less restrictions through the exhaust and turbo boost will automatically raise.

The beep noise is the fuel cut ... that means that the stock ECU will run a safe mode when boost raises too high (to prevent engine damage).

Yes i'm sure

&

Too make HKS lots of money on a part you really don't need, it

doesn't filter the air any better than the stock airbox and actually

draws in hot air from the engine bay unlike the airbox which gets its

air from outside the engine bay.

If your engine is over boosting then i'd guess its de catted and

possibly doesn't have a restrictor ring fitted, i'd be getting this sorted

sooner rather than later, if you were hitting fuel cut i'd have thought

you would notice that and surely if the car is boosting to 1.2 bar it

must have an FCD

Is that built into the HKS boost controller you have ? Which model of

boost controller do you have ?

HKS are EVC with a number, Apexi are AVC i think

The beep is more than likely an audible warning from the HKS controller

and not fuel cut.

Luxluc, Dnk, Thank you for taking time to explain to me.

It is still a little bit hard for me to understand 100 % of what you are saying..

So, that mean that i have to rememve that HKS red stuff ?

I wonder why the previous guy installed it then..

Unfortunately, i am not good enough in mechanics to remove it myself.

I will have to ask to someone.

About the boost controller its an EVC that looks like this.

Yes, the beep is not fuel cut but the warning from HKS controller.

When you say fuel cut, do you mean the rev limiter ? When you go over some rpm it automatically stop ?

About the decatted stuff i am not sure 100%, so maybe if i take pictures of the muffler it will help.

Again, please wait until next Saturday for pictures, i will do my best.

Thank you again for your explanations !

You don't have to remove the induction kit if you don't want too

(the red filter part) and fit a stock airbox but it would be better.

Nearly everyone fits induction kits believing its better for performance

or just because it looks better, i have an Apexi filter on my car :) but i know

the filter is one of the best, the HKS filters aren't that great.

If your boost is going over 1.2 bar then it needs looking at as this isn't good for the turbo's

Here are a couple of pics of my engine bay, with the Apexi filter and with the stock airbox

arrowed in red with the top cold air feed in yellow, there is also another cold air feed that is

on the bottom of the airbox and goes under the headlight

Fuel cut is when the boost pressure goes over 1 bar, stock boost is 0.8

it will feel like the engine has stopped and you will get the main warning triangle

on the dash light up for a few seconds

That looks great !

Are the blue part painted? The blue 2JZ look very stylish!

Are parts and tube painted for better visual clarity?

Anyway, i am so happy to own a Supra now, and also very happy to have join this community :)

The center piece or spark plug cover is painted to match the blue silicon hoses, a lot of parts have been

powder coated gloss black, strut brace, intercooler pipes, inlet manifold, battery clamp, rad clamps etc

I just fancied doing it so purely for looks really
