MOT questions and queries answered...

Hey all,

MOT time coming up again for me! I am still living abroad, with the Supra covered up in the UK with less than 1000 miles on it per year.

Last year, I took it to a local MOT centre, and it failed all over the place on emissions. It's a single turbo boostlogic (T6765) setup, with no cats and a full 4" HKS Titanium exhaust (so it's also very loud). When I then took the car to a well-known Supra specialist for an MOT, which was a bit of a journey, they told me that my local MOT tester "needs to read his MOT handbook because the car in an import, and he didn't test it properly". So I figured I would have been ok on emissions if they had tested it properly. I don't want to have to drive another 1.5 hours just for an MOT this year, especially when I have limited time in the UK to see my family/friends.

With that said, is there anything specific I need to tell the "normal" MOT tester to make him carry out the tests properly. It's a 1995 RZ-S 6-Speed Manual which I've now had for almost 13 years! I saw the details by Graham S on the first post in this thread, but that was back in 2010, so I am wondering if anything has changed or, because the car is now 20 years old, is it more relaxed? Or is there anyone near Guildford that can do the test, knowing what the car is!

I also nearly failed on dodgy numberplate size and spacing, but they just said I need to make sure I have a "proper" set lying around somewhere in the car :D

Thanks very much,

James

I think Benjy has posted up a flowchart from the VOSA MOT tester's handbook about import emissions testing. I couldn't find it from a quick search though. The key point is that your model of car (a UK supra isn't the same as an RZ-S supra, although they both have the 2JZ-GTE engine, not sure if that changes things?) was never sold directly on the UK market, it's a grey import, therefore doesn't have VOSA-approved emissions tolerances.

As above, the import TTs do not have a guideline CAT test, they have the standard "one size fits all" CAT test that was used previous to the more stringent standards coming in. The UK Spec Supras have a list of values for certain rev ranges, the import supras don't.

To quote Benjy...

If it's an import then Vosa hold no vehicle specific data, therefore subject to pre 92 test.

There is NO vehicle specific data for your car.

Any MOT guys can help with this one please?

My import SW20 MR2 3SGTE turbo was first registered on the 18th July 1995, so should have a non-CAT test, as there is no exact match on the analyser database (only the non-turbo 3SGE SW20 is on the database). If I look up the reg plate on the Gov website it confirms the car was first registered on the 18th July.

Today I've sent the car to be MOT'd but when the guy entered my reg plate on their machine it states the car was first registered in December 1995, so he says it has to have a CAT test as it is now all automated, he cannot change the date and said I'd need to speak to VOSA about the problem.

Just got off the phone to VOSA and they say the MOT guy should manually input the details if they are wrong and if he can't should speak to their MOT help desk.

As neither party is taking responsability, do I pursue the problem with VOSA or the MOT garage?

i have a question - i'm taking my supra for it's first test since my ownership - i will be retro fitting a rear fog light on the offside - does this have to turn on with the "stalk" and does it have to show on the dash board that it is on ?

cheers

It doesn't need to be on a stalk, the UK spec has the rear fog light switch mounted onto the ignition panel to the right of the ignition barrel, the switch needs a tell tail light on it so you know when the fogs are on.

A lot of owners use a UK fog switch and wire the fog lights into the stock rear lights.

UK fog lights switch part number is 84165-14020

hmmmm intriguing - there is already a orange flip switch ( which i have no idea what it's for ) mounted just below the radio and above the gear shift - wonder if it's already got wiring in for it ? thanks for that i'll go check it out tomorrow  i assume then that the stalk one would be for front fogs ( if fitted )

Needs to be a switch that illuminates, and ONLY operates when the headlights are switched on.
Has that requirement changed?

IIRC, the manual said that the rear fog should be checked with dipped beam on, but didn't say that the fog should go out when the headlights were switched off.

In fact, again IIRC, it said that the rear fog could be independent of lights and ignition.

Pretty sure that was what the book said the other day when I wired in my rear fog on the truck. That's how I did it after reading the book.
