Autobox Fluid - Can you change too often?

Just seen this on SF while looking into track day cooling -

http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120309

He talks about changing fluid at 7,500 - 10,000 miles rather than Toyota intervals of 15,000!!

Seems to contradict the 'don't change too often' views.

I don't know, now I'm totally confused:search:

Hadyn,

Still not had it fitted yet. My mechanic is really booked up and working all night tonight to finish a job.

The box is getting worse. It's starting to hang a gear change points and if I try for a burst of speed going uphill it slips like a slippy thing.

I think you should just change the 2l's that comes out from the sump on every, or everyother, engine oil change you do. The complete change of the fluid is what is not 100% recommended and certainly not often..........its costly and unnecessary even if it doesn't do any harm........

1.8 litres isnt it?

So a sump fluid change is at say 5k intervals is a good thing?

1.8L - 2l who's counting :)

If your fluid on the dipstick isn't bright and shiney red then i'd so a few changes at this rate would be fine..........but i'm pretty sure the interval is a bit longer per toyota........

To be honest, if (and it's still an if) Toyota say full change at 15,000 I'm tempted to stick to that (even though it sounds excessive).

After all, they should know.:)

I shall keep digging I think.

if you can find a definitive toyota recommendation i'd stick to that too :)

Just found this on my maintenance CD. It covers loads of Toyota models, so I've taken these out and just left the Supra detail. Elsewhere it suggests LSD oil changes at 30k miles, so that ties up (sort of) with the 'sevre conditions' frequency of 15k miles mentioned here.

So I guess it's up to the user to decide whether they are 'severe' users or not.:)
