TT with 5-speed box

i looked into that but the cost is still about 2k+ even with cheap parts + labour so thought the 5speed would be a cheaper and different option. I read in a previous thread that the W154 should be mated to a W58 bellhousing to take the torque of a TT lump? What diff would i need for say just the W58 box?

It's a marginal box in manual 2.5 TT Soarers, so will be even more marginal behind a 3 litre TT engine. It's a nicer change than the 6 speed Getrag (most boxes are...), but its torque handling capacity and synchro ring strength is limited. Save for the Getrag. Personally I don't see the point of a 6 speed box behind an engine of 3 litres with oodles of wide spread torque. My take is it was a fashion thing to help justify the cars price tag when it was new. If the budget ran to a stronger 5 speed that would be an even better choice, IMO, but it will need a lot of custom fabrication and cost plenty, alot more than a used getrag and associated bits and bobs.

AFAIK there are no uprated internals for the Toyota 5 speed box. It's not that strong, people were running them behind N/A 4 cylinder engines in Modsports racing and breaking them. Diff wise you need to do the maths and work out what you need to achieve whatever top speed you *NEED* at a given input shaft RPM (engine RPM).

Its called the R154 and it is stronger than the W58. You can buy a rebuild kit for about $250 and that includes synchros, bearings and seals. The only problem would be the bellhousing. You need a bellhousing to mate the R154 box to the 1j/2j motor. Most R154's are now sourced from MK3 turbo supras so they come with the 7mgte bellhousing. Also, you will need to extend the shifter but thats no biggy.

Personally Im a fan of the 5 speed as the gears are longer. More time in gear and less time changing.

i agree totally, the r154 is much smoother and w58 is even smoother again but your restricted from the torque the tt engine has,r154 is not a bad option ive been there....also tt lsd is much better suited if you dont wanna mess with it that much, all you need is lsd and half shafts, and with that add a rear sub frame mount and use a spliced tt prop(diff end) and w58/r154 on the gearbox end,ive got one spare if you ever go this route, as previous post says the r154 isnt cheap cos youll also need to modify shifter poss £150 if you send it in,and buy a 1jz bell housing-£300 from mr T,easiest way is just buy a 1jz gearbox that way no bell housing is required but there probably just as rare as the v160!

good luck m8!

Im also a big fan of the r154, and have put some big power through them. The weak point on the r154 is the thrust Washer which is the gearboxes only achilies heal. As a bove, the rebuild kits dont cost much, and the box isnt rocket science to work on.

The bellhousing can be bought from Mr.T Still contraty to it being a "rare" item.

Theres actually a few on SF now looking into running the r154 setup as its proved quite reliable on the Strips in the states.

The only problem with running more than 600hp+through them is clutch choice. The top end twin plate systems from exedy, Os gisken etc etc are good for 900lbft+ but you need a push to pull converter.
