over the next couple of weeks i need to get myself a little run around thats economical on fuel etc.

just wondering about what options i have? looking to spend no more than £1k really.

so far im considering:

a) mazda 323 1.5lsi (the small roundy shape one)
b) audi a4
c) honda accord/civic

any other suggestions at all? :) cheap to run as possible really and doesent have to look good as i have the supe for that anyway.

you'll be lucky to get an A4 for £1k and it'll likely be a dog.

I've got an audi 80 and love it to be honest, only cost me £700 too.

if you could net an 80 TDI then you'd be sorted mate.

Any German diesel motor will see you well so long as you have the budget, TDI's obviously being the preference.
Failing that a jap diesel should be as reliable, just make sure the bodywork is decent.

If I were running a daily sh*tter it'd be a 1.something diesel fiesta, no point getting somthing nice if economy is your only concern!

BTW, don't use the Thor account to post anymore, you can use one or the other, not both.

I know ive found a couple of decent looking tdi passats on auto trader.
i have to get one in the next couple of weeks though, im also considering a 1.5 honda civic advertised locally its only £500, but the running costs on that arent too high afaik?

I had a Passat TDI as a company car 7 yrs ago - awesome on the mpg, could get nearly 60mpg on the motorway and was very smooth and comfortable. The Civic should be much cheaper to buy but is in a completely different (lower ;) ) league.

I know all about how great the passat tdis are on mpg.. my both older bros and dad have one each as they love them so much. got to keep my eyes peeled now and find something enough to do the job!

I have a Pug 306 Turbo Diesel.

Dirt cheap to insure and run (apart from tax). Had it 2 years now and not faultered once. :d

Her name is Pugslena ;)

BTW Maz, did I see your car at Fosse Park the other day, parked up near the furniture shops?

Am I being daft or does this make no sense here? :D

I've been looking round for ages for the perfect runaround - cheap insurance, good mpg but still a decentish car. Same sort of budget. The ideas I've come up with so far -
Toyota Corrolla 1.3 (roundish shape)
Escort diesel van (just for the usefulness)
VW Passat (but the older B4 shape - tdi, estate)
Renault Laguna diesel - not sure about reliability though
Escort 1.8 td - the later ones are meant to be good
Saxo - mate bought a 1-litre as runaround and it's been great
Pug 306 DTurbo - first of decent sporty diesels, good handling
Any Peugeot diesel in fact
Mercedes 190 or similar - if you can find a diesel all the better
Citroen ZX Volcane diesel

Hope that helps a little

Skoda Octavia's - as good as the VAG offerings for obvious reasons but badge snobbery means they are much cheaper. Quite quick too but still throws out 45mpg+.
