View Full Version : Which sub for my setup?
Looking for some advice... I am building a box in the spare wheel hole, the sub box will be sealed, and will cover a little over half the hole (the other side will be for amp, etc).
I'm looking at mounting one 12" in the top left corner, so I need some suggestions! I don't want to spend much more than £100-£200 on a sub, but I want it to take a bit of power. I was thinking of something like (as two examples):-
JBL P1220E (http://www.bassjunkies.com/?pid=25806&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3F&source=subcategory)
or:
Audiobahn AWES12P (http://www.bassjunkies.com/?pid=30693&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3F&source=subcategory)
I have a Kenwood mono 1000 (tested at a little over) rms amp, so I want something that's going to be power hungry with good SQ. I don't need it to rattle the spoiler off and set off car alarms, but I'd be upset if it can't make my ears bleed a little bit!
Doesn't have to be new, as long as it has plenty of life left and isn't blown (like most of the ebay ones that I buy seem to be!) so if you feel I'd be better off buying a second hand JL 12W6 or 7 then I might keep an eye out for that.
Basically what do you guys think - and if anyone has a good one going spare in their garage they think would suit me, please IM me.
this is a serious sub mate these are awsome and thats a really good price on that site i know a guy who run 2 of these and produce 142db in a toyota celica. if you want something that can take as much power as you want to put through it and be reliable thats the one for you. The guys at our local car audio specialist put 600watt RMS through it 150rms more than stated and it run fine no problems they had it going for a good hour.
i have a 15" one thats really awsome! also the quality of these are spot on!

Thing is with audiobahn there ratings are so over rated these have been test many times and melt before they even hit half the power they state they can take.. along with alot of other makes dont know how they can do it,
I've got a Cerwin Vega HED 12" sub for sale if that's any good? You could pay me £100-£200 if you really wanted!!!! :D

and if that wasnt bad, what about the other one....
" JBL P1220E 1600 watt peak 12" subwoofer"
I have a measly 300W RMS sub in mine and think its more than loud enough.....obviously you guys need to get your head examined if its not your ears :D
its JBL mate enough said lol
I dont like really loud bass anymore used to love it so done alot of research :)
My problem is definately my ears - too much loud music when I was young, I reckon I'll be deaf before I hit 35!!
I can run a smaller (power wise) sub - my old 15" Kicker only handled about 400w rms and that survived the Kenwood as long as the power was turned down a bit.
OK, so JBL and AudioBahn are big steaming piles of poo, so what should I have? Got a short list of a Audio System Xion X12 so far!
lol not many people replying,
ive been told these are top notch aswell mate and they are cheap thats because they are a american product. If you dont like the yellow of the audio system these are just as good with a slightly better rating.

They are new on evilbay for under £100 delivered too... tempting... Thanks Dibbley
Anyone else then?
The Jl audio stuff is good quality and very well priced. Very understated power rated and really clear bass
Not that it helps, but this is going into my install when it's done :)

I've heard good things about the JL kit, does it have to be that 12w7 flagship one though, or are the others good too?
go for an alpine type R the one with the carbon fibre cone & kevlar reinforcements. nice tight bass. or if your like me then go for the type x in 12 inch, 1000 watts rms & 3000watts peak and will shake the earth with the right set up :)
Type x sounds good, bit expensive though, I've asked a couple of USA peeps how much for postage, with the dollar/pound exchange being so goo I might be able to afford it!
i have tried many subs in my supra--pioneer,jbl,audiobahn,alpine and am now settled on what appears at first glance a cheap make of sub, they are spl (german) not to be confused with motorworlds splx shite, these are 10kg a piece with dual 2 ohm voice coils and have a 750w rms power rating i run two of these in the spare wheel well and it rocks, no rattles no spoiler vibration just back thumping clear bass, make sure you buy some really good front speakers and sq and bass will be here to stay
sorry if im babbling but doctors put me on steroids for asthma and they are kicking in:blink:

yeah they are a bit expensive around £280 iirc. im going for 2 alpine type R's which i found in a mag - they are 12 inch the newer style ones for £150 including a box to hold them.. bargain in my opinion. if you want pm me and ill give you their number.
they are both 500watts rms each too and are a good build and sound is nice and tight.
Can get a Type X for around £200 from America - Sounds like a bit of a bargin really! I think I might have to do that. Thanks for all the help guys!
No the flagship JLs require too much powering for what it sounds like your after. Just the standard WO's Wired up at 2Ohm should sound good. I think you can buy them new for under a ton now as well.
Too late now! Ah well, I'm sure it will be fine, I'm going to BPU in the spring so I'll probably need the bigger sub so I can hear it over the exhaust!
or you could get one of these lol:p jokes
I'd have to get a trailer!! lol
