View Full Version : Service kit for GT60?
Hi Jarrett and Joe,
I have a PHR Stage One turbo kit with the GT60 turbo. The car is making lots of blue smoke on overrun and there seems to be quite a lot of radial movement on both the compressor and turbine ends of the shaft.
What are my options? Are these turbos serviceable? Do you sell a kit with the parts for replacement of the bearings and seals? If I want to get a local UK company to service (repair) the turbo will they be able to source the parts or do the parts have to come from you guys?
I don't even know who makes the GT60 that's in the PHR1 kit. What details would a local turbo specialist need to know about it in order to repair the fault?
Thanks for any help.
The turbos are made by ITS i think Jake.
My turbo i bought off a fellow member has a bit of shaft play too :taped: Is yours a DBB? if it is then ive heard that the bearings/seals cant be changed, new turbo jobby, if its just the normal one i dont think we should have many problems getting them serviced. Hopefully.

The GT60 is a PHR Turbo with Garrett internals. We do not sell just parts for the Turbo, we can do a service on the turbo with a starting fee of $500 + shipping to you. Depending on what else is wrong or if we have to replace anything major regarding the turbo.
Or you can buy a new Stage 1 Turbo for $1150.
Cheers,
Joe
So does that mean I won't be able to get bearings and seals for it from a UK turbo specialist? My local turbo specialist (www.turbodynamics.co.uk ) is a Garrett dealer BTW
When you say you can do a service on the turbo, what does that involve exactly? (ie what parts are checked and what parts are replaced?)
When i bought my turbo off a fellow member, he told me it had a 'slight' (hmm) bit of shaft play and he'd had a price to get it overhauled, by a turbo company in the uk, for £140. So i guess yours will be the same price to be done Jake.

We can do anything that is needed to get the turbo back to profection. Checking everything in the turbo; Housing, Wheel, Shaft, Gaskets, Bearings etc. If something is wrong we will replace it.
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Jake, you might want to do a compression and leakdown test on your engine also before you decide on the turbo being at fault. The DBB turbos have been known to smoke a bit before because of their nature of design. But the non BB turbos never smoke. The DBB turbos cannot be rebuilt by anyone but ITS since the parts are proprietery to ITS in the US. But, more times than not it turns out to be the valve stem seals, rings, or PCV system at fault and not the turbo itself. All of our turbos have shaft play, its normal. If there is no sign that the compressor wheel has touched the compressor cover anywhere (touched down as we call it) then its normal play. When the turbo gets oil pressure from the engine, what you feel as "play" becomes filled with oil just like an engine bearing.

"If something is wrong we will replace it"
In the $500 service?
If not, what parts are checked and what parts are replaced (if necessary) in the $500 service?
Also, would my local UK Garrett dealer be able to get the parts if it needs new bearing and seals? What would they need to know about this turbo to get the right parts? Or is that a PHR secret too?
Thanks

Blimey, this is hard work.
Ever get the feeling that your talking to yourself

Thanks,
Thats all i needed to know, my turbos fine then, thanks Jarrett :)
Thanks Martin, I hadn't noticed that post from Jarrett. He must've posted it while I was typing my latest plea for info.
Fuck knows what the problem with my car is then, if Jarrett reckons it's not the turbo. The compression test was OK, I don't know how to do a leakdown test and the symptoms (smoke on over-run) don't sound like a PCV problem from what I can make out. (Not that I really understand PCV operation but from what I've read)
Its not really so difficult, if the turbo is within its warranty and is defective or failing, we will replace it 100% no questions asked. But you have to return the turbo to us in order to get the warranty work done. If its out of warranty, we can have it serviced with a basic rebuild kit (center bearing, seals, thrust bearing, C clips, etc) for $500 with labor and re-balancing. If there is something else wrong the cost can be higher, but we dont know until we see the turbo here. As to having the turbo rebuilt locally in the UK, we dont have any dealers authorized to do that in the UK. All of our wheels and parts are made here in the US for us specifically, and we dont sell them separately for obvious copyright reasons. People have copied enough of our stuff for my taste, thank you! But if you need help, we can be reached much faster by email directly instead of the forums!
Thanks,
